Since Hurricane Isaac just stormed through my neck of the woods and is now on his way to the coast of MS and LA I thought it would be fitting to explore what the weather in our dreams means, particularly hurricanes. The following is an excerpt from the weather chapter of my latest book Dream On It, Unlock Your Dreams Change Your Life

Tornado and hurricane dreams both reflect the storm of worry that fill our mind from time to time. But there is a distinct difference between the meaning of a hurricane dream versus the meaning of a tornado dream, and the difference lies in the nature of the storms. A tornado is unpredictable, and you can see it coming but you never know if you will wind up in its path or not. A hurricane covers a broad area and its main characteristic is its powerful wind. And the wind is the key to the meaning of this dream. To the dreaming mind, wind represents the forceful changes that blow through our lives, “the winds of change” so to speak. When the wind in your dream is threatening, such as the winds of a hurricane, then the changes that are happening in waking life are upsetting you.

I dreamed my husband and I were trapped in a grocery store during a hurricane and could not find our son. It really bothered me.
– Chrissy 30

Lauri: Your inner mind must be feeling that you aren’t spending enough time with your son for some reason and that is where the missing comes in to play. You “miss” him. The hurricane tells us a big change has blown into your life, a change involving your son that is upsetting to you. This all takes place in a grocery store because you are hungry for the emotional nourishment your relationship with him provides.

Chrissy replies: My son just started kindergarten so you are right. We do not have the time together anymore that we are used to and I have been having a hard time adjusting.

Even though we love to watch our children grow and develop, a part of us resists the changes because it means that, before we know it, our baby will be an adult and no longer in need of our cuddles and care. Chrissy’s dream reflects her inner awareness of how fast the changes her son is going through are blowing through her life.

The message of hurricane dreams: The winds of change are upon you and are causing you a tremendous amount of upset. The more you resist the changes the more difficult they become just as it is harder to walk against the wind than with it. Rather than evacuate these hurricane force winds of change, prepare for it and withstand it. And remember, the eye or center of the hurricane is the calmest point, if you can center yourself you too will find peace despite the changes whirling around you.

Weather changes from one day to the next, even from one moment to the next, and so do our emotions. To the dreaming mind, our emotions are the weather conditions that form and flow within our psyche.  Just as a meteorologist tracks the weather in order to keep us informed and prepared to handle the days ahead, so should we track and understand our psychological weather to keep us informed and prepared to handle our lives  If you pay attention, your own dreaming mind will give you the most accurate and reliable emotional forecast available.

The weather chapter of Dream On It also covers: Tornadoes, Hurricanes, Rain, Floods, Lightning, Snow, Ice, Sun, and Rainbows

Hi Lauri, I have two of your dream books but don’t have the last one yet. I had a dream last night that the ground was falling away like it was the end of the world. Things being swallowed up by lava and water. I ran until a group of us got to a military base and they weren’t letting anyone in and then I woke up. If you can help me figure this dream out it will be helpful..I do have a lot of Tornado dreams yes I know I am a worry wart..lol

    1. In a nutshell, something must be causing you to feel unsupported, unstable or on shaky ground. You may need to find a way to be more militant or disciplined in order to resolve the matter. As you may know, I offer private and much more in-depth readings starting at just $15.00. You can get a lot more from your dreams this way: https://www.lauriloewenberg.com/dream-readings

I had a tornado dream last night in which we were in an open field area and could see many funnel clouds approaching. Could this relate to my son moving off to college this weekend?

  3. Absolutely! I can only imagine the worrisome thoughts swirling around in your head about that!!

Hi. I used to have a recurring dream about being at the beach with my kids and we would watch the waves as they grew larger and larger and we would rushinto this beach house with large Windows just in time for a large wave would crash the house. We could see sharks and then I turned around and could not find my children. I would frequently have this dream and waked up in an anxious state. I don’t have those dreamsany more, but I have since divorced an alcoholic husband and my children are now adults @ 24 & 25. I often wondered what the dream meant.

  5. Hi Lauri,
I had a dream i was in my mothers house eating and as we (my mother, her boyfriend, and my brothers girlfriend) were eating the storm was already in place. As we ate it countinued to build itself as hurricane. I moved to the hallway when windows were getting broke. It later calmed down as a drizzle.

    Hi Lauri,

Last night I had a dream where a hurricane was coming rather fast and I had to take shelter with an ex co-worker, whom I haven’t worked with for over a year at my previous job. In the dream we felt like we were going to die and I just kept praying for my husband and two children to be ok. The winds were very strong but we survived. Our home was torn to shreds but I was able to find my husband and two kids who were sheltered in a department store basement. I’ve been having many vivid dreams lately, this being the most recent. I’ve no clue what’s going on here.

    All the best,
    Sadie

I have had dreams in the past month that there was a tornado hitting this random city me and my friends were in. Each time I either was responsible and ran to find a safe place or irresponsible and ran with them. Although, in every dream about this there are always different friends and I always end up finding my mother and my sister. After this we run around a bit then the dream stops right before I die

Last night i had a dream about work. I am a tugboat captain and in my dream they were dredging out a new “cut” for the illinois river in peoria ill. They were digging at least 60-100′ deep, when the illinois river is at an average of 10-20′. I was talking to some other guys on the other boats, no real meaning as i cant even remember what we talked about. Out if nowhere, the fleet dispatcher, who is very religious, is next to me and we are talking. Again i cant remember about what, but the end if our conversation was her saying, “its the year of the hurricane”, and just looking at me waiting. Those are the only words that really stand out, and the only other really “unusual” aspect was the depth the corps of engineers were digging to.
After the words of the lady i work with, the dream just stopped.
