*Yes, that is the actual house I dream about ->

It’s actually pretty common in dreams to find yourself residing in a home you haven’t stepped foot in for decades. I get asked about it all the time.

The best way I’ve found to figure out these “old house” dreams is to first realize that it’s not really about the house but rather who YOU were when you lived in that house. Remember, EVERYTHING in your dreams is symbolic of some part of you and some part of your life. So that former house in your dream is really some part of you that needs your attention and focus right now. What happens in the dream and even the rooms that are focused on in the dream are insightful clues.

Let’s use my dream as an example. In my dream we are moving back into the house. I am excited about it. And in most of these dreams I am unpacking and setting up the room in the house I used for art in real life. When I open the closet, I discover that the previous owners were in the process of expanding it into a playroom/man cave. It’s not yet finished but I am excited to find it and more than willing to finish it.

In real life, when I lived in that house, I spent a good deal of time painting, designing T shirts and greeting cards. When we eventually moved from that house, I stopped creating art because I was focusing on building my career as a professional Dream Analyst. So that house and that room in that house represent me the artist.

Just under two years ago, when the dreams began, I had started painting again (after 18 years of doing nothing with my art). Essentially, I was “moving back in” to the groove of being an artist. I am excited in my dreams because, in real life, I wake up excited every day knowing I am going to paint! The playroom/man cave that I discover in the closet that is under construction is my Pin Up portrait business. I started it in February of this year and it has been growing ever since. And I think the man cave aspect of the room is that many of my pin up portraits are given as gifts to husbands and boyfriends that hang them in their man caves. Ha ha!

The message of these dreams is: “This old part of you is back. Continue to build it and play with it. Continue to enjoy it. Don’t stop it like you did before.”

Just in case you are interested, you can see my custom Pin Up portraits here.

I just love my dreams. They never fail to guide me. Your dreams are doing the same for you. Here are some questions to ask yourself that will help you find the message in your former house dreams:

How would you describe yourself and your life when you lived in that house?

Is there anything in your current life that seems or feels similar to back then?
– If so, do you need to nurture that or move on from it?

How are you feeling in the dream?
– What in your current life causes you to feel the same way?

Is there any particular room that your dream seems to have more focus on?
– If so, what was that room typically used for? For example, a bathroom is used to cleanse and to relieve yourself. What from back then do you need to cleanse and relieve yourself of? A kitchen is used to prepare, to eat and to feed others. Is there anything from back then you are hungry for now?

In a nutshell, dreaming of your former home will typically mean there is something from back then you either need to bring into your current life or that you need to leave in the past. The questions above should help you figure out what it is. Life is all about growing and improving as we move forward in time. Our dreams advise us on what to leave behind and what to take with us along the way.

We all know Martin Luther King Jr.’s iconic “I have A Dream” speech, but what you may not know is that Dr. King had an actual, nighttime, REM dream that seemed eerily prophetic!

According to a documentary on The History Channel, on January 15, 1968, during his 39th birthday party, King told his aide Dorothy Cotton a dream he had the night before…

“I had died and no one was there. I yelled to Ralph Abernathy (a minister, civil rights leader and close friend to King), Ralph, bring those people standing there over here.”

Was this dream warning him of what was to become a reality only two and a half months later? No one can say for sure, but what is a fact is that other notable figures who made huge waves in history had dreams of their own deaths only weeks beforehand, Elvis, Princess Diana and Abraham Lincoln, just to name a few.

What is telling about Dr. King’s dream, is that he seemed to know that he would die before his dream of racial equality would be realized, which is why, in the dream, he asks his close friend and fellow civil rights leader to finish the job by “Bringing those people standing there, over here.”

We use the term “where someone stands” when referring to their point of view on an issue. Bringing “those people who stand over there – who have a different standpoint than King’s – over here” is all about King’s hope that one day all of humanity would stand together.

“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy. ” –Martin Luther King, Jr.

When I first began studying and researching dreams, I was surprised how often snakes slither into the collective dreamscape. All these years later it still amazes me how many snake dreams are reported to me daily, and the majority of them are rather frightening… with good reason. Snakes evoke fear in most of us, even to the point of phobia! They have sharp teeth, a demonic forked tongue. They can strike at lightning speed and inject you with their poison. Shudder.

Because of these widely-feared characteristics, the dreaming mind often uses a snake to represent the dangerous, venomous behavior of someone close to you, and most often, of someone who is typically male. Yes, the phallic shape of the snake plays a big role in its meaning.

I recently dealt with a snake dream in my nationally syndicated newspaper column The Dream Zone.

Dear Lauri,
Last night I dreamed there were lots of snakes in the carpet and they were fighting spiders. I was watching from another room. I could see hundreds of them. I knew that during the day they hid in the room but at night they took over the rug. I could see hundreds of them, not lethal, just swarming. – John, Chicago, IL

Lauri: You’re a spectator in the dream so it may be connected to an issue in waking life where you are watching things go down, so to speak, rather than getting involved. Or perhaps you are feeling disconnected from something you feel you should be a part of.

Snakes can represent health issues but more often they can represent someone with lowdown poisonous behavior. There were lots of snakes so that can mean that the waking issue is either multifaceted or that this issue involves lots of people that you feel exhibit low down, poisonous behavior. And sometimes, the more there is of something in a dream, the more space the issue is taking up in your head.

The spiders suggest that this is something that has really been “bugging” you and that you may even be conflicted about since the snakes and spiders were in a conflict. The snakes and spiders only coming out at night makes me think that this is about people you feel operate in a dark and shady manner. Since you had the dream last night, something from yesterday triggered it.

John replies: I am in the media and I talked to a friend yesterday who is also in the media. We were discussing our frustrations with how people operate in field of work and how we are in the same boat, sort of in limbo, as we were both recently passed over for respective opportunities. It really bugs me the way the media is and it’s so easy to take it personally. I am so over it and do feel I should disconnected from it. That is a daily feeling, actually. Thank you.

I’d have to say that the question I get asked the most is “What if I never dream?” Okay, that is probably the second most asked question, the first being “Is that your real hair color?” Anyhoo… it’s surprising to me how many people think they don’t dream. The truth is we ALL dream. It is a natural and necessary function of the brain. In fact, every 90 minutes throughout the night we have REM dream sleep. We average about 5 dreams per night and will have over 100, 000 dreams throughout our lifetime!

So the better question is, “Why don’t I remember my dreams?” Or even better than that… “How can I remember my dreams?”

Glad you asked. And it’s easier than you think!

Don’t move when you wake up
Whenever you wake up, whether it’s in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom or you’re waking up for good in the morning, stay put! It is essential that you remain in the same position you wake up in because that is the position you were dreaming in. If you move your body you disconnect yourself from the dream you were just in seconds ago! If you have to wake up with an alarm, go ahead and turn it off but get right back into that position you woke up in.

Give yourself three to five minutes of quiet still time
Remain quiet and still for just a few minutes. Don’t think about what you have to do today. Stay put. Keeping your mind clear will make it easier for the dream you just experienced to come back to you. You’ll be surprised what is there, waiting for you to capture it!

Start asking questions
If nothing is coming to you during this quiet, still moment start asking questions like: How am I feeling right now? Who was with me? What was I doing? These questions will help jog your memory because we always experience some form of emotion in our dreams, there are usually other people or characters in our dreams and we are certainly doing something.

Write it down
Whatever you remember, even if it’s just a tiny piece, like someone wearing bright red lipstick or you just remember feeling sad, write it down or record it into your phone. If you don’t document it in some way it will be gone after breakfast. Typically, our ability to remember our dreams fades after just 90 seconds from the point we wake up.

Make this a habit and you’ll start remembering your dreams more and more every morning. It’s like a muscle, the more you do this simple exercise the stronger your dream recall muscles will get. I promise those floodgates will open and you will be pleasantly surprised (Dare I say SHOCKED) at how much of a crazy life you’ve been living at night.

Being able to not only remember but understand your dreams will bring clarity to your life. You will develop a much deeper understanding of yourself, your behavior and of the world and the people around you. Problems and difficulties can be solved with confidence and ease. That’s why when we have a tough issue to figure out we say, “let me sleep on it.” What we’re really saying is, “Let me Dream On It!” Grab your copy of my latest book Dream On It today and understand your dreams like never before!

Most of us have at least one pesky and persistent dream or dream theme that won’t leave us alone. But why? Why does our subconscious go all Ground Hog Day on us and keep placing us in the same setting with the same struggle and with the same characters?

In my research I have found that there are two main reasons for recurring dreams: One reason is that the recurring dream is connected to an ongoing issue, for as long as the issue continues, so will the dream. In this case, the recurring dream is trying to act as a guiding force, helping the dreamer better understand and navigate the issue so that he or she can resolve it and move on from it. The ongoing issue dreams only recur for as long as the issue continues, which means you may only get them for a few weeks or months. When the issue is resolved the dreams stop.

The other reason is that the recurring dream is connected to a recurring behavior, whenever we exhibit the behavior in real life we get the dream. The teeth falling out dream is a prime example of this. It is usually caused by the recurring behavior of speaking before thinking about it, saying something that really ought to have remained in your mouth. In this case, the recurring dream is a subconscious reaction to a behavior that needs to be corrected or monitored. The recurring behavior dreams are often lifelong dreams but will stop when the behavior is overcome.

Below is an example of each type of recurring dream: the recurring behavior dream and the ongoing issue dream.

“Tombstones in My House” (An ongoing issue dream)

Dear Lauri,
The last three nights I’ve had a dream that involved a cemetery. But in the dream the tombstones are all inside a big, creepy house and I’m scared. The graves are all very old and the houses are always Victorian and filled with antiques. – Renee 32

Lauri: The old graves, the Victorian house and the antiques all suggest this dream is dealing with an old issue in your life, an issue that is dead, over and buried but for some reason, the last few days or so, it is on your mind again or something is causing you to feel affected by it again. Also, the tombstones are inside the house rather than out in the open. This suggests that this may be something that you have kept to yourself rather than opening up about it. Your subconscious is trying to show you this is something that is over; rather than allowing it to haunt you, let it remain buried and in the past where it belongs.

Renee replies: Wow… that’s amazing. In part of the dream there were even people that come out of the tombs to chase me (which obviously must be related to a past issue chasing me). I’ve actually been dealing with a relationship issue that keeps reoccurring and I have been keeping it to myself. I had an affair a few years ago. About a week ago the man I had the affair with contacted me. While I have no interest in repeating my past mistake, I haven’t told my husband this man reached out to me again. I’ve been struggling with whether or not to tell my husband. It has been weighing heavy on my mind.

These dreams are reminding Renee that this affair is dead and is buried and that mentioning to her husband that the guy is reaching out to her will only bring all the pain back to life… for both of them. The dream had to keep coming back and telling her the same thing again and again until she got the message. And the message is: Don’t raise the dead!

“Tornadoes” (A recurring behavior dream)

Dear Lauri,
I have had recurring dreams of tornadoes for as long as I can remember. Last night I had a dream that I was in a trailer by myself. There was a horrible storm and then a tornado appeared out of nowhere! The windows started breaking because of the hail. Then the trailer was actually picked up by the tornado and landed safely in another state! – Nancy 36

Lauri: Lifelong recurring tornado dreams are a good indication you are a proud, card-carrying member of the worry-wart club. You’ll find that your tornado dreams are likely to coincide with your bouts of worry or panic. You’ll also find that your bouts of worry are often over something that you cannot control, just as no one can control a tornado, it is an act of God. In this latest dream you are in a trailer, which is the weakest structure you could be in during a tornado. This means you are not feeling very strong at the moment. Then your trailer winds up in another state! Your dream is telling you that you need to move on from this worrisome “state” of mind. Sometimes you’ve gotta let go and let things play themselves out naturally. When you can move into this more relaxed state of mind, your tornado dreams will have no reason to come back.

Nancy replies: Yes I am a worrywart. I worry about everything!! I will have to start keeping track of when I have the dreams and what I am worried about at the time.

Your recurring dreams work the same way too. Whether they are connected to a recurring behavior or an ongoing issue, the recurring dream is letting you know you are stuck somewhere in your life. It is important to remember that the dream cannot move forward until you move forward, whether that movement is in the form of correcting a behavior or of handling an issue and putting an end to it. Think of your recurring dream as your mom, who only wants the best for you but has to keep telling you the same thing over and over until you finally get it and take action.

I’m sure you’ve heard it said that we dream in black and white. NOT TRUE! That is a myth that seems to have been born in the 50s, the age of black and white television. The truth is, we all dream in color just as we see in color. Sometimes a dream can be in shades of grey or the colors can be muted. In these cases, it is often due to depression. Sometimes our dreams can have an old black and white movie feel to them and that is often because the dream is commenting on an issue from your past. So, for the most part, our dreams are in color and very often, vivid technicolor!

The color choices our dreaming minds make are not at all random! When a color stands out to you in a dream, it is for a very good reason. Here are some common colors and their meanings…

White – Are you starting over in your life? This color suggests a new beginning is underway.
Green – Are you or is anyone around you feeling or expressing jealousy? Less often green can represent growth.
Yellow – Is there something going on in real life you are fearful of or need to be cautious about?
Black – Most often connected to negativity.
Blue – Often points to depression, the blues.
Red – This color in a dream is often a red flag from your subconscious warning you that some situation or behavior needs to come to a full stop.

As with any symbol in a dream, with colors you also want to try to include your own personal associations. Does the pink in your dream remind you of your childhood bedroom? Does the orange in your dream remind you of the colors of your high school football team, etc. If there is a strong personal association to the color in your dream, try to connect the dots as to why that color, and what it reminds you of, is relevant to you right now.

Every single detail in your dream has a meaning, from the colors down to what is said in the dream, it all holds a message for you that is specifically designed to help you with your life. In my latest book Dream On It, Unlock Your Dreams Change Your Life, you’ll not only learn how to understand the symbols that show up in your dreams, you’ll also learn how different dream themes are connected to the different parts of you. For example, house dreams are connected to your self image. Animal dreams are connected to your behavior. Nightmares are connected to difficult and mis-handled issues. If you don’t want to wonder about your dreams anymore, if you want to be able to easily understand them from now on, get yourself a copy of Dream On It!

“This book was the real thing. It helps you understand your dreams easily and will change your way of regarding life.” – L. Pichette

You may not know this about me but I was an artist before I was a professional Dream Analyst. Well, I wouldn’t say I was a professional artist as I had no formal training and certainly wasn’t making enough money painting murals in people’s homes to survive, but I was painting a lot. I painted because I liked it.

Long story short, my interest in dreams took me off that road. I became so involved in building my career as a professional Dream Analyst that I completely neglected the artist in me… until my dreams started nagging me about it. You can read about how my dreams guided me back towards my art here and here. BTW, your dreams are guiding you towards your ultimate self too… if you just pay attention.

I had a few false starts over the years, getting back into my art – you know how it is, you try to start something but life keeps getting in the way. But now, I am back full throttle! And what you see here on this page, are some of my recent pieces. I’ve been getting such great encouragement and feedback from others that I joined up with an art site so that people could purchase art prints of my work, for an extremely affordable price, as well as my work on cool items such as the ones below; Lord knows I could use the additional income these days. Be sure to keep scrolling down, and if you like what you see, click on the picture and it will take you to the page where you get one for yourself!

The most common affliction our dream bodies suffer is that of losing teeth or cracked and crumbly teeth. Were this a problem with your waking physical body, you’d probably want to get thyself to the dentist ASAP! But when your teeth are a problem in your dreams, you’re better off seeing a communications expert. To the dreaming mind, your teeth, as well as any part of your mouth, are symbolic of your words. Paying attention to your teeth dreams helps you to monitor and improve the way you communicate.

The following teeth dream is from my nationally syndicated newspaper column The Dream Zone. And while more than teeth are lost in this dream, the message still applies…

Dear Lauri,
Last night I dreamed I had braces on all my teeth. I removed all the braces and half of my teeth came out along with my tongue. It looked like a creepy science experiment, but it all grew back instantly. The weirdest part was my tongue. It had all kinds of weird colors and stuff on it, and I put it in a large glass of fruit punch. So creepy! – Dave 36, Cleveland, OH

Lauri: Sounds like you’re having a major communication issue. When any part of the mouth is brought to attention in a dream you can bet it is referring to something you have said recently. The braces suggest you have been trying to “straighten something out” verbally. But since your teeth and your tongue all came out in the dream, you must have said a lot of things that you wish you could take back and put back in. Placing your tongue in fruit punch seems like a totally random and bizarre thing to do but I think it reflects that, after this communication, you felt like you were “punched.” But fear not, your dream is giving you good news despite the embarrassment you must have experienced. It all grew back instantly, meaning that you’ll bounce back just fine. You have, “saved face,” so to speak.

Dave replies: Yesterday I called me ex, told him I was sorry and asked him to take me back, etc. It was a stupid move. This makes sense. Thank you.

Dave’s dream not only reflects his embarrassment after allowing too much out of his mouth, it also gives him encouragement that it will all be okay.

*** Dream books make a great Valentine’s Day gift for your “Dream Lover!!” ***

It’s been so effective that it has been featured on Dr. Oz, the Bethenny Frankel Show, Fox Business and more! It also includes a chapter on animals in dreams and how they are connected to our behaviors and instincts. Once you’ve read Dream on It you’ll never look at your dreams the same again!

Do you ever “dream of food?” Boy, I sure do! Just about every other night I have some form of pastry, or candy in my dreams! Sure, food in dreams can be commenting on your waking life diet and showing what you need to add or remove, but more often, food in dreams is connected to what you desire, what you “hunger” for in waking life, such as a promotion, a new relationship, or in this dreamer’s case, a little less chaos in her life. This is from my nationally syndicated column, The Dream Zone…

Dear Lauri,
I had a dream my boss was forcing me to make a pumpkin pie from scratch. She kept telling me it’s her secret family recipe. She even handed me a pumpkin I had to use. She was being mean in my dream and normally she’s a very nice person. – Candice 30, Salt Lake City, UT

Lauri: The family recipe that is continually mentioned in your dream may refer to your own family and the recipe for success in family life. And I think that’s why your dreaming mind is using pumpkin pie specifically, because pumpkin pie is mostly associated with the big family holidays, Thanksgiving and Christmas. So this dream is most definitely trying to help you with a family issue.

Since your boss is not acting like herself, then she is not playing herself but rather standing in for your own role as boss in the family, as well as your ability to manage the family, the finances, etc. Are you the one wearing the pants, making the decisions, and so on? It seems that right now you may be feeling you have too much on your plate or too tall of an order from your family to deal with.

Speaking of pies, as Astronomer Carl Sagan once said, “In order to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first create the universe.” In other words, rather than focusing on the perfect final outcome, work on getting all the little things right that come before it.

Candice replies: You are so right on! I am a single mom doing everything. I get no help at all from my daughter’s father or from the state. I have been stressed out that I’m not ever going to get help and the day before I had the dream, I was home from work with a sick kid. Thanks.

Your dreams are working hard for you too, helping and guiding you with every single area of your life. If you would just listen to them, you’d be surprised how much practical advice they are offering.

When you can understand what your dreams are telling you, you can make huge positive changes in your life and you’ll wonder why you didn’t start listening to your dreams sooner! Grab yourself a copy of one of my books and you’ll never have to wonder what your dreams mean again!

“I am not a reader but I cannot put these books down or stop thinking about what I’m learning! I have not been this excited in I don’t know how long. My husband originally got me these books because I have crazy dreams constantly and we wanted to try and make sense of these dreams, but reading these books, it’s so much more than just trying to make sense of dreams, it really is a whole other world! Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart for changing my life!!”

My favorite type of dream to get is the star studded celebrity dream. I swear a celebrity makes a cameo in my dreams practically every night. The celebrity dream is also my favorite type of dream to interpret because, for the dreamer, the various celebrities that have made an appearance seem completely random. But as I always say, NOTHING IN A DREAM IS RANDOM. It’s fun to help the dreamer connect the dots between the celebrity and their own life. There is ALWAYS a connection and when it is found… so is the message.

Here’s an example of a celebrity dream I helped a friend on Facebook with just yesterday:

Parker: Why does John Lithgow keep turning up in my dreams? There could not be a celebrity I am more indifferent towards. No matter where I am, or what I’m doing, Lithgow shows up. In the dreams, he never plays a pivotal role. For example, I’ll be at a baseball game with some friends and one of them will say “Hey don’t you know that guy?” and point to John Lithgow a couple rows down. I’ll say “Yeah, Hey Lithgow! What are you doin’?” And he’ll say, “Oh just watchin’ the game” and I’ll say “OK. Talk to ya later then” And the dream resumes as normal.

Me: All right young man. Here is the 1 question you must always ask yourself in order to figure out what the celebrity in your dream really means… What movie or character or song first comes to mind when you think of this celebrity?

Parker: Strangely enough, the first Lithgow moment that always seems to come to mind is his cameo on 30 Rock, were he gets lost in the building and can’t find his way out. He’s playing himself.

Me: Well as you probably know, he symbolizes a part of you. Perhaps a part of you that is lost, indecisive, not sure which direction to take next. Is there any area of your life where you feel this way? He was trying to get out of the building in that episode, right? Is there a situation or obligation in your life you don’t know how to get out of, something that is causing you to feel stuck?

Parker: Well, I did just tell a bunch of cub scouts who were touring the station yesterday that the biggest mistake they could ever make would be pursuing a career in radio…. so I guess my job qualifies as a situation I need to get out of.

Me: That makes sense! Plus, in addition to his appearance on 30 Rock he starred in 3rd rock from the sun. So that’s 2 references to rock that he is connected to. And your station is a rock station!

Parker: One day when I’m a windsurfing instructor in Tahiti I’ll look back and thank Lauri Quinn Loewenberg and dream Lithgow for encouraging me to make positive life changing decisions.

Remember when I said “nothing in a dream is random?” Yep.

* Want another example of how to figure out the celebrity in your dream? Here’s one using Lenny Kravitz.

Want to be able to connect the dots in your dreams and find the powerful message waiting for you?
