Sometimes it’s hard to decide what New Year’s resolution to make because there are so many things we’d like to change, and some of us don’t even bother with it. If this sounds like you then you may be interested to know that – whether you can’t decide or you don’t think it’s worth it – your inner subconscious mind knows what you should change in this new year… and it has probably been nagging you about this for quite some time. In other words, if you have any of the following common recurring dreams, then you have got yourself fertile ground for a New Year’s resolution!

Being chased – If you’re constantly running from something or someone in your dreams at night, then odds are you’re avoiding an issue in waking life. In general, chasing dreams are caused by “fight or flight” situations where you choose “flight” or avoidance rather than “fight” or confrontation. Perhaps you’re the type that tries to get out of obligations, or you avoid someone rather than having that needed confrontation with them. Whatever the case, if this is your recurring dream then avoidance and procrastination is your issue.

The resolution – Resolve to face and deal with your issues this year, no matter how difficult they may be. You can’t run forever. Avoidance is never a good way to handle an issue. All it does is prolong the pain and anxiety. Like ripping off a band aid, it may be difficult or painful for a moment, but once it’s taken care of the relief will feel so good!

Tornadoes – If this is your recurring dream then you are likely a proud card-carrying member of the worry wart club! Tornadoes are a classic symbol for worry and anxiety over approaching doom. The spinning of the tornado is also important as it is connected to the idea that you feel something in your life is spinning out of control. These dreams are showing you your own worry in the form of a tornado so that you can understand the destructive force it has on your psyche.

The resolution – Time to channel your inner storm chaser this year and confront these worries head on. First, identify what your worry is connected to. Is it something you have no control over like world affairs or someone else’s issue? If so then know that all you can do is change your reaction to it. Rather than fearing the worst, hope for the best or remove your mind from it altogether. If your tornado dreams are the result of worry over a current situation directly connected to you that you can change, then stop focusing on what you fear the end result may be and start focusing on what you want the end result to be. A simple shift in your thought process can make huge positive changes in your life.

Your mate is cheating – This dream has caused a lot of men to get slapped first thing in the morning! But it rarely means that your mate is actually getting his or her pleasures elsewhere. It DOES mean, however, that there is a third wheel in the relationship. No, not necessarily a person but rather a thing. There is something that your mate is giving too much time and attention to and it is causing you to feel “cheated” out of the time and attention you feel you should be getting. Usually the third wheel is work, but it could be something like fantasy football, the X Box, golf or a new baby that’s taking all the focus away from the relationship.

The resolution – Resolve to carve out more time for each other. Ask your mate if they can cut back a bit on all the time he or she is giving to this other thing. Don’t be naggy about it. Offer up a compromise. “If you cut back on X then I’ll cut back on Y,” for example. If this isn’t possible because the third wheel is work or a new baby, then make a date night. Once a week make sure you create a time and place where it is just the two of you focusing on nothing else but each other. This will not only fan the flames in your relationship, it will stop those awful cheating dreams dead in their tracks!

Filthy, clogged or out of order toilets – This dream often has major Eew factor! It’s also one I get a lot. In this dream you gotta go! But you either can’t find a toilet or the ones you do find are nasty, clogged, out of order or even in a place where everyone can see you go! This recurring dream means you have a recurring behavior pattern of “holding in” your frustrations and negativity rather than “”relieving yourself” and opening up about what is bothering. These dreams are showing you what you are doing to your inner psychological plumbing: you are allowing it to get backed up! The more you hold in what you feel is “crappy,” the more life will stink!

The resolution – This year, start working on letting it out. It doesn’t matter what others think of you. If something is bothering you, holding it in is the worst thing you can do. That will only lead to tense relationships, angst, headaches and even back pain! When we hold in emotional frustration, it starts to affect us physically. So let it out and flush it away. You’ll be surprised how well those that are frustrating you will be able to handle it… and most importantly, you’ll be surprised how great your clean, clear emotional plumbing feels!

Teeth falling out – Believe it or not, this dream has nothing to do with your oral hygiene! Anything having to do with the mouth in a dream is actually connected to the way you have been communicating lately. Loose teeth in a dream mean loose speech in waking life. And if they fall out of your mouth uncontrollably, then odds are you’ve let something slip out of your moth the previous day. If you gossip, if you say things without thinking about it or tend to continually say things you wish you hadn’t, you’re likely very familiar with this recurring dream.

The resolution – Start thinking before you speak! Once it’s out of your mouth, you can’t put it back in. Be mindful that what you say affects others. The loss of teeth in waking life would make you worry about your looks the same way bad communication might make you worry about how you appear to others. Just as you polish those pearly whites for aesthetics, polishing up your communication skills will make you shine too.

It’s a new year. Why not create a new you?

The history of making New Year’s resolutions dates all the way back to the time of ancient Rome. The Romans are responsible for the majority of the modern calendar and for the tradition of making resolutions on New Years.

In 153 BCE Janus, a mythical king of early Rome was placed at the head of the Roman calendar by the Roman Senate. In legend Janus had two faces which he used to look to the future and the past. Since it was believed that Janus could forgive transgressions, many Romans would give gifts and make promises at the beginning of the new calendar year. Their belief was that Janus would see this and then bless their life for the entire year. And thus we have the tradition of making New Year’s resolutions.

Sometimes it’s hard to decide what New Year’s resolution to make because there are so many things we’d like to change, and some of us don’t even bother with it. If this sounds like you then you may be interested to know that – whether you can’t decide or you don’t think it’s worth it – your inner subconscious mind knows what you should change this year… and it has probably been nagging you about this for quite some time. In other words, if you have any of the following common recurring dreams, then you have got yourself fertile ground for a New Year’s resolution!

Recurring dreams are like Deja Vu for the subconscious mind; it is reliving something it already experienced. While the reasons for a conscious Deja Vu are still theoretical, the reasons for a subconscious Deja Vu – or recurring dream – are pretty solid… and there are two of them. One reason is that the recurring dream is connected to an ongoing issue, for as long as the issue continues, so will the dream. In this case, the recurring dream is trying to act as a guiding force, helping the dreamer better understand and navigate the issue so that he or she can move on from it.

The other reason is that the recurring dream is connected to a recurring behavior, whenever we exhibit the behavior in real life we get the dream. The teeth falling out dream is a prime example of this. The teeth falling out dream is usually caused by the recurring behavior of speaking before thinking about it, saying something that really ought to have remained in your mouth. In this case, the recurring dream is a subconscious reaction to a behavior that needs to be corrected or monitored.

Below is an example of a recurring dream being connected to an ongoing issue. I love how this dream provides very clear advice for the dreamer in the form of tombstones!! This is from my nationally syndicated newspaper column The Dream Zone…

Dear Lauri,
The last three nights I’ve had a dream that involved a cemetery. But in the dream the tombstones are all inside a big, creepy house and I’m scared. The graves are all very old and the houses are always Victorian and filled with antiques. – Renee 32, Syracuse, NY

Lauri: The old graves, the Victorian house and the antiques all suggest this dream is dealing with an old issue in your life, an issue that is dead, over and buried but for some reason, the last few days or so, it is on your mind again or something is causing you to feel affected by it again. Also, the tombstones are inside the house rather than out in the open. This suggests that this may be something that you have kept to yourself rather than opening up about it. Your subconscious is trying to show you this is something that is over; rather than allowing it to haunt you, let it remain buried and in the past where it belongs.

Renee replies: Wow… that’s amazing. In part of the dream there were even people that come out of the tombs to chase me (which obviously must be related to a past issue chasing me). I’ve actually been dealing with a relationship issue that keeps reoccurring and I have been keeping it to myself. I had an affair a few years ago. About a week ago the man I had the affair with contacted me. While I have no interest in repeating my past mistake, I haven’t told my husband this man reached out to me again. I’ve been struggling with whether or not to tell my husband. It has been weighing heavy on my mind.

These dreams are reminding Renee that this affair is dead and is buried and that mentioning to her husband that the guy is reaching out to her will only bring all the pain back to life… for both of them. The dream had to keep coming back and telling her the same thing again and again until she got the message. And the message is: Don’t raise the dead!

Your recurring dreams work the same way too. Whether they are connected to a recurring behavior or an ongoing issue, the recurring dream is letting you know you are stuck somewhere in your life. It is important to remember that the dream cannot move forward until you move forward, whether that movement is in the form of correcting a behavior or of handling an issue and putting an end to it. Think of your recurring dream as your mom, who only wants the best for you but has to keep telling you the same thing over and over until you finally get it and take action.

A lot of people will swear that I am psychic after I have analyzed a dream for them. But I’m not. That, I can swear on! It only seems like it because I know how to connect the dots in a dream to the dots in waking life. In a nutshell, that’s all it takes to analyze a dream… find the connection, follow the thread. There are some tricks to it, which I teach you in my latest book Dream On It, Unlock Your Dreams Change Your Life and once you start applying these tricks to your dreams, you’ll start being able to figure out your dreams too… and seem like a psychic to your friends!

Below is an example of how connecting the dots from a dream to real life reveals the message like magic! This is a word for word communication between a friend and me via Facebook yesterday…

Friend: Soooo, I had sex with an Indian man (India-indian) and it was GRAPHIC. HOLY COW. Three days ago and again last night. I rarely have recurring dreams. I feel like I’m cheating on my husband because of how graphic this was. And, you don’t HAVE to answer… I ‘m asking for free crap which is annoying

Me: Okay… what do you associate with India or Indian people? Have you been watching The Big Bang Theory?

Friend: I watch big bang every day. I can’t think of anything having to do with India other than ebola… and, that’s Africa.

Me: This is probably the connection, the BIG BANG (ahem) theory. .

Friend: ohhhhhh

Me: So, describe Raj to me. *Raj is the Indian guy on The Big Bang Theory

Friend: Geeky, insecure, lonely

Me: Are you feeling that way lately?

Friend: Actually, yeah. My best friend has been really distant lately…I started working for her at her vet clinic and we don’t “socialize” much anymore.

Me: Has it been especially strong the last three days or so?

Friend: Yes. We tentatively made a coffee date and she decided to spend the day with her mentally abusive boyfriend because he paid attention to her. I was mad as hell and feeling ditched.

Me: Did you speak up about it to her?

Friend: I was going to write her an email (because we never seem to talk anymore) but I decided not to. Damn….you are amazing.

Me: Raj never speaks either… to women because he is too insecure. You are being Raj.

Friend: OMG……… How freaking amazing is that????

Me: Speak up and the dream will stop.

Friend: How awesome. wow

As you can see, everything in your dream has a connection to yourself and what is going on in your life right now. My friend’s dream was associating Raj from the Big Bang Theory to her current behavior with her best friend. My friend didn’t recognize the Indian guy as being Raj because she didn’t recognize that she was being like him in real life. In addition, her dream was trying to show her that being silent like Raj is causing her to feel “screwed” over. Her dream kept happening because these feelings kept happening. All it takes to stop a recurring dream is to take care of the behavior or the issue that is causing it.

If you want to be able to connect the dots in your dreams so you can get the important message they are giving you, my latest book Dream On It, Unlock Your Dreams Change Your Life will help!

Zombies have been staggering into our dreams long before they were so prominent in our pop culture, believe it or not. But knowing what zombies actually represent to our collective unconscious, it makes sense as to why they frequent our dreams as much as they do. Think about what a zombie is, it’s a dead body that still has life to it. It is decaying and falling apart, yet it walks and eats and tries to survive even though it ought to be dead and buried. It does not belong in the land of the living. In that same vein, many of us tend to keep certain issues or grudges alive even though they came to an end some time ago.

Recently, I was a guest on AJ’s Playhouse in San Diego, CA when a gal called in with a zombie dream… and this one ate brains!

What I didn’t get to address on the air – due to being up against a commercial block – was the brain eating aspect of this dream. Yeah, zombies are known to eat brains, but there is certainly more to it than the fact that it comes with the territory.  This dream is showing this caller, not only that her grudge against her mother is something that she needs to let die, but that it is also eating away at her. It is consuming her thoughts, hence the eating of the brain reference. This dream is a very clear message that her grudge has got to go.

Did you hear her relief when she was finally able to understand this dream? I think I might have even heard a chorus of angels sing!! That’s what your dreams are doing for you every single night. They are giving you the answers you need, the advice you seek and the solutions to all your problems… you just need to be able to understand their language.

When understood, your dreams offer a continuous supply of answers, warnings and inspiration that you need to know. Your dreams are pretty much a how-to guide for your life. Any dilemma you ever face, any inspiration you ever need, any warning you need to pay attention to… it is ALL given to you in your dreams.

Grab yourself a copy of my latest book Dream On It, Unlock Your Dreams Change Your Life and you’ll be understanding your dreams in no time!

When I first read about Robin William’s suicide, I immediately thought of the suicides in my family… not even a year has passed since the most recent one. Sigh. Depression can take even the best of us down. It is not to be taken lightly. It is a monster, a big, powerful, unrelenting monster. Depression will come and go. It is rarely a constant in the life of one who suffers from it so it is important to manage it as best you can, stay one step ahead of it if possible.

In my research, as a dream analyst, and in my own experiences I have found that our dreams will often give those of us that suffer from depression a heads up when another bout is on the way, making it a tad easier to manage. If you suffer from depression, look for these symbols, or variations of them, in your dreams:

Your dreams being void of color and in shades of grey.
– In dreams colors can symbolize your current emotional state. Yellow can represent fear, red can represent anger. Blue can point to the blues, but it is more a situational blues such as being blue over your best friend moving away rather than a full on depression. Overwhelming grey in a dream is more often a tell tale sign of depression as it indicates a lack of vibrancy in your mind.

Frequent falling and/or drowning dreams.
– When falling or drowning you are going down and that’s the operative word here, down. Depression brings you down. It is heavy. It’s like an elephant sitting on you. And it can feel like falling or drowning, like there is nothing to support you. Your emotions, your thoughts, your hopes, everything just keeps going down, down, down. Dreams bring to life what is going on in the psyche.

Something submerged below the surface of water about to emerge.
– This is one I get a lot, usually it is an alligator below the surface of the water but it has been other nondescript things. In this sort of dream the surface of the water would represent your emotional surface and the creature or object just below it is the depression getting ready to rise and show its ugly self beyond your ability to keep it pushed down.

Shadows and dark rooms.
– Dark rooms often symbolize the darkness within yourself. Often, a person will dream of a house that has a dark room in it (not the type of dark room that is used for photography but rather a room with no light) and the person is afraid to go in there. Sometimes they are feeling pushed in there by an unseen force. This dream is a big time warning that your dark depression needs you to focus on it so you can manage it. Shadows in dreams can often represent the part of the self that we consider our dark side, the Heisenberg to our Walter White, so to speak. If the shadow is becoming threatening to you in your dream, and it is a frequent dream then this could be your depression beginning to take over.

Rain and storms.
– Rain in dreams is a classic symbol for tears in real life, often tears you have not allowed yourself to shed. We all have situations that cause us to be sad but if the rain in your dream is frequent and especially if it’s a torrential downpour, this could be your depression getting ready to drench your psyche once again.

Obviously, we are all different and can have our own personal symbols for depression in our dreams but the ones mentioned above are fairly common. Often, they will show up in your dreams as a warning because your body is telling you a bout of depression is on the way. This will allow you to prepare for it. You can plan to spend some time outside with friends. Surround yourself with people who make your laugh. Go see a funny movie or volunteer. Helping others can do wonders for your psyche and your soul!

There are also times when you are already in the throws of darkness when these dreams happen. At that point your dreaming mind is merely showing you what the inside of your mind looks like. A picture is worth a thousand words, as they say. Sometimes seeing yourself in a different perspective can help you to make better decisions regarding your depression. Ug. I don’t want to be void of color on the inside. I really should get help, for example. These are the times you need to tell someone what’s going on with you. They will want to help you!

Most depressions don’t end in suicide, but enough of them do that we all need to take depression more seriously. If you have depression DO NOT BE EMBARRASSED to tell someone. At the very least, you can call a depression hotline. I Googled it so I could put one here in the post but there were so many! There is help everywhere so ask for it. Depression CAN be managed. Things can get better.

I’m the best in the business and can help you fully understand every part of your dream, find the issue that is causing the dream and the message and guidance your dream is giving you. It also has a dream dictionary in the back for easy reference. This book has been featured on Dr. Oz 3 times! You’ll be glad you have it on your bedside next time you have a strange or upsetting dream.

Whether it’s wandering the cinder blocked halls of your old high school with nothing on but your Nikes or catching your teeth as they fall out of your mouth one by one, we ALL get a certain dream over and over and over again. Even celebrities aren’t immune to the frustrating recurring dream! Read on and find out if your recurring dream is covered here and which celebrity shares that dream with you…

Teeth Falling Out
Lucky you! If you get this dream you share it with the gorgeous Halle Berry. This also means that you and Halle share the same recurring behavior of speaking before thinking. Teeth in dreams typically symbolize your words. If they fall out in a dream you can probably connect it to something you allowed out of your mouth, something you said that you wish you could take back or that you wish you had worded differently.

Plane Crashes
Not so lucky you. This is not a fun dream to have, but if this is your recurring dream you and Katie Couric have a lot in common. When I was a guest on her show back in April of 2013, she told me that she gets this dream quite a bit. Neither you nor Katie should cancel any travel plans because this dream is not showing you the future, instead it means you have suffered a big let down in your real life. Something you had high hopes for came crashing down instead… along with your spirits. Katie has suffered many let downs, which caused emotional crashes: She lost her husband to colon cancer, then her sister to pancreatic cancer. She lost her gig on the CBS Evening News just to name a few. If this is your recurring dream, try not to take things so hard. Pick yourself up, dust yourself off and keep on keeping on. Like Katie, you’re a survivor!

Flying
Definitely lucky you! This is not only an awesome dream to experience again and again but you also share this dream with Anderson Cooper. Flying dreams happen when we are feeling really good about what is going on in our life, when we have reached a high goal we have set for our self or we are realizing our ability to reach higher levels in life and in career. In my research, I have found that adults who get recurring flying dreams are very high achievers. So if this is your dream, you and fellow high achiever Anderson Cooper should pat your selves on the back. Good job!

Find out what your dreams REALLY means, instantly and absolutely FREE!

Running Late/Almost Missing A Bus or Plane
This one is soooo frustrating. If this is your recurring dream then you have a lot in common with Diane Sawyer. She gets this dream a lot because she is constantly up against deadlines, what with being a journalist and delivering the news every evening. You probably have a high pressured, heavy deadline job as well. If not, but you still get this dream, then you may be up against self imposed deadlines, such as losing 10 lbs by the time the reunion rolls around, having a spouse and kid by the time you’re 28 or reaching a career goal before the end of the year, etc. In either case, you may want to find a way to either take it easy or take the stress off yourself. Life is short, why live it in a pressure cooker?

Being Attacked
Gah! This one is so scary. But if this is your recurring dream, Madonna would probably love to compare notes with you over coffee because this is her recurring dream. More specifically, she is attacked by a dwarf with a knife! None the less, this dream suggests you are feeling victimized in real life. Is someone around you always putting you down and criticizing you? Or is this something you are constantly doing to yourself? If so, knock it off. Sheesh. You have to be kind to yourself in this life. As for Madonna, she faces a lot of criticism from the media and the public in general. While it may not bother her while she’s awake, it clearly bothers her while she sleeps. And the dwarf? That’s her fear of being dwarfed or diminished in the public eye. Let’s face it, she’s a BIG celebrity and she does everything in a BIG way. However, criticism does bring her ego down to size.

Old Victorian Houses
If you dream of old houses then you have this dream in common with Madonna’s pal Gwyneth Paltrow. Houses in dreams symbolize the self, one’s state of mind and self image. Like Gwyneth, you may be a bit old fashioned in some areas; perhaps you have very good etiquette and impeccable manners or you believe in marriage before sex. In Gwyneth’s Victorian house dreams, she finds herself in the house while the house is being swept away by a river. This tells us that Gwyneth, despite all her refinement, tends to let herself get carried away with various emotional issues. While she seems cool as a cucumber in public, she may not always be able to hold it together in private.

Naked in Public
If this is your recurring dream you may be hoping you share it with someone like Beyonce or George Clooney, right? Well… if this is your recurring dream you share it with Meat Loaf! This dream tells us that you and Meat both have recurring concern about how others view you, not necessarily how others view you physically but how they look at you as an artist (in Meat’s case) or how they see you as a professional in your career or how good of a mother you are, etc. Are they noticing your mistakes? Do they not see you as highly as you would like them to? Did they see how nervous you were when you were giving that presentation in front of the board? In Meat Loaf’s dream, he’s actually naked on top of a bus. In your naked dreams, where are you?

Losing Your Purse or Wallet
You might be pleasantly surprised to know Mariah Carey gets this dream too. If this is your recurring dream then you and Mariah also share the fact that you suffer an identity crisis from time to time. We keep our money, credit cards and IDs in our purses and wallets so they will symbolize our self worth, our sense of self and the credibility we feel we deserve. To lose a purse or wallet in a dream means you feel you are either losing a sense of who you are, you are feeling worthless or you are not getting credit where credit is due. Mariah has mentioned many times that growing up biracial caused her to feel out of place so it makes sense that she would dream of trying to find her purse because she was always searching for identity, a sense of belonging and feeling valued.

Drowning
Do you wake up gasping for air after a drowning dream? So does Star Jones! Drowning dreams can be caused by a number of things: Depression, being overwhelmed with responsibility or even Sleep Apnea! If you wake up gasping for breath A LOT, then go to your doctor and get checked for Sleep Apnea, okay? But if you get the drowning dream frequently and don’t always wake up gasping for breath, then odds are it is connected to depression or feeling very overwhelmed. Star told me she was having this dream when I was on The View back in ’04. At the time she was in the midst of planning a wedding, being a host on The View and doing red carpet reports for E! News so I chalked it up to being overwhelmed.

Choking
This one can also be caused by Sleep Apnea if you get it a lot and wake up gasping. But if you don’t wake from this dream gasping then you will be happy to know you share this dream with Celine Dion! Choking happens in the throat and the throat is where our voice comes from so to choke in a dream can mean you have a hard time speaking up in real life. You may tend to choke back your words rather than voicing your opinion. For Celine, she chokes on a cold apple in her dreams! This makes sense because her voice is AMAZING and it is how she makes her living; it has been very “fruitful” for her, hence the apple. Any singer will tell you they must “warm up” their voices before a performance so a voice going cold, like the cold apple, would be a nightmare! For Celine, these dreams are reminding her to take it easy on her voice so she doesn’t choke during a performance.

Murder
Hard to believe that America’s sweetheart has recurring dreams of being a murderer, isn’t it? And if this is your recurring dream it may not make you feel much better knowing that Taylor Swift gets it too, huh? Well fear not. To murder in a dream usually isn’t a bad thing. It means you have successfully put an end to something in real life. In Taylor’s dreams, the murder doesn’t actually take place but rather she has knowledge that she has murdered someone, “I always have nightmares that I’m being framed for murder and then I’m being framed SO well that I can’t remember if I did it or not in the dream. So that really winds me up and then I’m just freaked out for the next couple of days.”

Now, what we all know – and quite frankly love – about Tay Tay, is that she goes through relationships like a bag of Lays potato chips. We love this about her because her break ups inspire her songs. These recurrent break ups are likely the murders in her dreams. There is also confusion about whether she actually committed the murders or not; she is framed for the murders. This shows us that in real life, Taylor doesn’t feel she is at fault for the break up (a break up is a forced ending, like a murder is a forced death). But as time goes on, she probably questions herself, “Hmmm. Maybe I was too clingy or too demanding,” for example (she’s framed so well she can’t remember if she actually did murder). But here’s what’s sad about it guys, feeling that she is framed for murder in the dreams might mean in real life she feels used in relationships. She feels used over and over again because she has this same dream over and over again.

Why do you keep murdering in your dreams? It may be that you have a recurring behavior of putting an end to things as well. Are you the type that tends to sabotage a good thing because deep down you feel you aren’t worthy? Or are you the type that nips things in the bud before they get out of hand? It could also be that there is one ongoing situation that needs to end but you haven’t fully accomplished it yet. In a nutshell, recurring murder dreams don’t mean you are a homicidal maniac but rather someone who ends things… whether those endings are good for you or not is a whole other story!

While it’s fun to find out which celebrity has the same recurring dream as you, it’s important that you know why we get recurring dreams. In my research I have found that they are caused by two main factors: 1. A recurring behavior pattern, whenever you exhibit the behavior you get the dream connected to it. 2. An ongoing issue that has yet to be resolved. For as long as the issue continues, so will the dream. Look at your dreams as if they were your mother, nagging you to death about an issue or behavior who only wants the best for you but won’t stop until you finally correct it. Except in some cases, like the recurring flying dream, as that is more of a high five from your subconscious mind than a nag.

I think we’ve all had that dream where we discover a room or series of rooms in our house that doesn’t actually exist in real life. I get that one A LOT! In my dreams it is usually a whole other wing of the house I didn’t know was there or had forgotten was there.

These “secret room” dreams are typically connected to a part of the self that you are just discovering or that you are not using. In my case it is my art. All my life it has been a very big part of who I am, hence it being presented to me as an entire wing of the house, but I have absolutely neglected it to focus on my career as a Dream Analyst. So my dreams keep nagging me and telling me, “remember this part of you? Use it already!” Anyhoo…

Sometimes the secret room in our dreams can be scary, haunted or even demonic, which is the case with Ashley who is a lady that called in while I was on the air with The Morning Rush on KISS FM in Toledo OH yesterday morning. Have a listen because her dream reveals, not only an interesting family issue, but also the way the dreaming mind helps to bring closure to that which we have overcome. It’s only 6 minutes long and well worth the listen!

Ashley’s situation beautifully illustrates how our recurring dreams are connected to ongoing issues that need attention. Her dream is also a good example of how our recurring dreams guide us through the issue and even pat us on the back once we have resolved it.

Do you have a secret room dream? If so, you need to first try to identify what part of you or your life is not being used right now or has recently been discovered then compare the condition of the room and your feelings towards the room to this unused or newly discovered part of yourself. In my secret room dreams (or rather secret wing dreams) I wondered why I hadn’t been using this part of the house. And the funny thing about that is, I recently started painting again after 15 years. When I completed the painting I was VERY pleased with how well it turned out and I said to myself, “Why did I ever stop doing this?” Zing!

I can help you completely and thoroughly understand what your built-in therapist is telling you! Getting your dream interpreted is actually a pretty big deal. Like Ashley, you’ll be amazed and thankful once you are able to understand your dream. You can set up a personal reading with me here or you can easily learn to understand your dreams for yourself with one or all three of my FABULOUS dream books. Whether you get a book or opt for a personal reading with me, you’ll wonder why you didn’t do it sooner!

“I’m very impressed with your ability to get so much meaning from a dream — and your willingness to get to the bottom of it. Especially for such a great price! I assumed I’d get something far more cookie-cutter for that price. I have so much gratitude!” – Carrie B. Seattle, WA

If you have never had that dream where you’re back at your high school or college, wandering the halls trying to find your locker or sitting in Algebra class freaking out because you didn’t study for the test, then you might not be normal!

The back at school dream is in the top three most common dreams that is reported to me… daily! In fact, when I was on Katie Couric’s show, she told me her 90 year old mother STILL gets it! And that is good testimony to the fact that 10, 20 even 70 years after we graduate we still find ourselves, from time to time, within those cinder block walls at night.

I’m a victim of this dream too. There are many versions of the back at school dream and the one I get the most is where I find out I have to take my senior year or sometimes even all 4 years of high school all over again, even though I know I graduated. In fact, I had it just the other night and the very next morning when I was on the air on Beach 104 in Nags Head, NC one of the morning show hosts told me he had that same version of the dream the night before as well! So that inspired me to blog about it because, clearly, it’s an epidemic!

My dream: I was back in the house I lived in in Nashville and I was putting on my old Catholic high school uniform. I was very upset because I had to take my whole senior year all over again even though I was certain I had already graduated. I was saying to myself, as I was getting dressed, “This is ridiculous! I don’t have time to spend all day at school. I have a son to raise and a business to run. I’ve done this already. I’m just going to tell them no, I’m not doing this.” THEN I’m walking through my junior high trying to find my locker and realizing I don’t even know my class schedule. Thankfully Marlo Thomas shows up and takes me to my class.

What it means: Usually, back at school dreams can be connected to what is going on in your job or career in real life. The stress you are dealing with in the dream should seem similar to the stress you are experiencing in waking life in your job.

Having to take my senior year all over again – This dream happens whenever I feel I have to prove myself in my career, whenever I have to prove to others that I know what I’m doing, that I have the knowledge, etc. This dream is so common for me, as you can imagine, because I am constantly having to prove that dreams actually have meaning AND that I really do know how to make sense of them. Now, this particular dream is connected to stress I was having over my Blogtalk radio show. The day before, my co-host Frankie and I were doing the show but were having all kinds of technical difficulties and I was ready to forget it and just reschedule the show for the following week. But I had been in that situation before, being on air with technical difficulties and managed to get through it. That’s why, in my dream, I said to myself, “I’ve done this already!” Whatever you tell yourself in a dream is always important because it is usually direction or reassurance you are giving yourself for your waking life. Even if another character in your dream is telling you something, it’s really YOU telling yourself.

Didn’t have my class schedule – When you can’t find your class or your locker in a dream or don’t have your schedule, it can be connected to uncertainty you are having about where you are in your job or career field. Maybe you aren’t in the right job for you or maybe you aren’t yet where you feel you should be in the corporate ladder, for example. For me, it is uncertainty about my Blogtalk radio show. I’ve been doing it for only a couple of months now and there are some uncertainties surrounding it. Is it going to be successful? Are people enjoying it? Are they learning from it? Where is it going to wind up? And after all that technical trouble and stress I had from the show the day before this dream, I was definitely questioning where this was going to go.

Marlo Thomas leading the way – Whenever you get a celebrity in your dream, it is usually more about what that celebrity is best known for (such as a song, a character they may have played or even a movie or show they were in) rather than it being about the celebrity. To me, when I think of Marlo Thomas I think of the 60’s sitcom she starred in called That Girl. Every show ended with someone exclaiming, “That girl!” in reference to Marlo’s character being the one that bungled something up or perhaps even did something right. In other words, she was always being identified and singled out at the end of each show and she was leading the way to where I was supposed to be in the dream because I need to remember that I am “that girl” people rely on to help them understand their dreams. This is who I am so no need to be so uncertain.

As for the morning show host who had the same version of the back at school dream, well, he was actually a fill-in host for the regular morning guy. And he was having to prove that he had the know-how to handle the morning show.

I just love putting the pieces of a puzzling dream together and finding the big picture! Being able to figure out your dreams isn’t just fun, it’s unbelievably helpful to your life!! We all are being given answers, directions, even warnings in our dreams every single night through our dreams… you just have to know how to understand the language and piece it together. It’s really not that hard. That’s why I wrote Dream On It, so the YOU can do this too, so that YOU can get those powerful messages hiding in your dreams, so that YOU can improve every area of your life by understanding the wisdom of your very own dreaming mind. Get yourself a copy and start understanding your dreams like never before!

In my career, I’ve been lucky enough to do appearances on morning drive radio all over the country, which has provided me the opportunity to talk to thousands upon thousands of people about their dreams. I’ve done just over 3600 appearances thus far, and in the majority of those I get asked about that horrifying dream where a dark shadowy figure, demon or ghost comes into the bedroom and begins sucking the very life out of you, rendering you unable to breath… or scream… If this sounds familiar to you, then you MUST read on. The following is from my syndicated weekly newspaper column The Dream Zone.

Dear Lauri,
I keep having a dream that something is trying to possess me. Every time it tries to get inside me, or once it just lay on top of me and I can’t move or speak. I can just scream in my head to go away or to get off of me. The first time I had to yell in my head “I love God and God loves me” this dream scares me so bad and I have had it three times. The last time was earlier this week. Please help! – Amber 25, Salt Lake City, UT

Lauri: This is not a dream… nor is it a demonic possession. It is actually a fascinating physiological experience called Sleep Paralysis, or The Old Hag Syndrome! And there is not a thing one should worry about when it happens. Here’s the deal, when we sleep and enter the REM state, which is when dreaming takes place, our brain releases a chemical that literally paralyzes our skeletal muscles so that we don’t act out our dreams. When we’ve had a fitful night of sleep or haven’t slept long enough, we will start to wake up before our brain can re-activate our muscle control, which causes us to get “stuck” in that in between state of sleep and wakefulness, called Hypnogogia. Cool name, huh? In this state you are asleep and awake at the same time, which is why you are aware that you are in your room and in your bed. This is also why you can’t move, speak or scream… because you are still paralyzed! It is mostly physiological and will subside in a moment or two. It is not harmful in any way and does not mean there is anything wrong with you. No need to call your priest! The cure is to try to simply get more sleep and get negative issues off your mind before bedtime.

Amber replies: That sounds exactly what is happening to me! I will definitely try to write out my negative thoughts before bed and hope that it helps! Thank you!!

What I also HIGHLY suggest to folks, the next time they experience Sleep Paralysis, is to take advantage of it… because it’s a actually a way cool state of mind, being asleep and awake at the same time, a foot in both worlds so to speak. The next time it happens, rather than trying to scream or pray, ask the creature in your room “Who are you? And what do you want?” You will get an answer! Or you could have fun with it and ask the creature, “What is the meaning of life?” and see what sort of answer you get. Or you could even will your self to float up out of bed. It’s a cool feeling. Essentially, when you are in this hypnogogic state, you can easily turn it into a lucid dream and direct the dream to happen anyway you like. You can use it for insight into your waking life problems (by asking questions) or you can use it just for fun. Whichever you decide, I can assure you that now that you know what is going on, it won’t be nearly as frightening the next time it happens, and in fact, can become quite the powerful tool to explore the inner workings of your mind.

Dreams are powerful things! In fact, they are the most powerful part of who we are. Whether your dreams are advising you, warning you or inspiring you, they are an endless resource you can tap into every single morning… once you know their secret language! My dream books will have you understanding your dreams in no time! Keep them by your bedside so you can easily figure out your dreams as soon as you wake from them. You’ll wonder why you didn’t get them sooner!
