According to History.com, Ward Hill Lamon, Abraham Lincoln’s former law partner, friend and sometime bodyguard—told a famous story about the 16th U.S. president’s premonition of his own death. According to the tale, just a few days before his assassination on April 14, 1865, Lincoln shared a recent dream with a small group that included his wife, Mary Todd, and Lamon. In it, he walked into the East Room of the White House to find a covered corpse guarded by soldiers and surrounded by a crowd of mourners. When Lincoln asked one of the soldiers who had died, the soldier replied, “The president. He was killed by an assassin.” (Interestingly, Lincoln supposedly later insisted to Lamon that the body on display was not his own—so he himself did not view the dream as a portent of his own demise.) Some historians have cast doubt on Lamon’s account, which was first published in the 1880s, nearly 20 years after the assassination. Though Lamon claimed to have reconstructed the incident based on notes he made in 1865, it does seem odd that neither he nor Mary Lincoln mentioned the dream right after the president’s murder.

Even if Lamon’s story isn’t true, Abraham Lincoln was apparently quite interested in the meaning of dreams and what they have to say about future events both positive and negative. Proof of his curiosity lies in an 1863 letter to his wife, who at the time was in Philadelphia with their 10-year-old son, Tad. Lincoln writes that Mary had better “put Tad’s pistol away” as he “had an ugly dream about him.” Moreover, members of Lincoln’s cabinet recalled that, on the morning of his assassination, the president told them he’d dreamed of sailing across an unknown body of water at great speed. He also apparently revealed that he’d had the same dream repeatedly on previous occasions, before “nearly every great and important event of the War.” This story again points to Lincoln’s interest in the predictive power of dreams—but it doesn’t offer hard evidence that he foresaw his own death.

There are numerous cases throughout history involving dreams that seem to predict the future:

• After the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, hundreds of people reported that they had dreams and premonitions of the ship’s demise.  Nineteen of those experiences were authenticated.
• MLK had a dream that seemed to predict his untimely death.
• Mark Twain dreamed of his brother’s death 3 days before his brother was killed in a riverboat accident. The details of Twain’s dream and the actual event are strikingly similar.

Last photo taken of the Titanic

As you may know, 106 years ago today, on April 15th at 2:20 am, the Titanic sank with 1,514 people still aboard. What you may not know is that after the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, hundreds of people reported that they had dreams and premonitions of the ship’s demise.  Nineteen of those experiences were authenticated.

How?

A precognitive dream or vision is authenticated when a third party  can confirm that the dream or vision was written down or relayed to a second party before the waking life incident actually happens. The waking life event must also play out exactly as dreamed and happen within days of the dream, not years later.

Eva Hart was a Titanic survivor and her mother was one of the authenticated cases. She talks about it here. She also talks about the rescue. It’s fascinating. I highly recommend you watch it!

Ships and boats in dreams

*The following is an excerpt from the Travel and Vehicle Dreams chapter of my latest book Dream On It…

Ships and boats travel on water, and water – to the dreaming mind – is connected to your emotions.  Like water, emotions are fluid, ever-changing and often run deep.  So when you find yourself on a boat or a ship in a dream, it is because you are embarking on an emotional journey in waking life.

Most often, boats and ships in dreams are related to the emotional relationship path.  Again, if you look at the figures of speech we use involving these vessels, you’ll see why: the love boat, two ships passing in the night, he’s a dream boat, etc.

I was in a boat speeding across the ocean toward the rocky cliffs. My ex was in the boat, driving. We were going straight toward the cliff, sure to collide with no slowing down. I woke up before the impact. – Darcey 47

Lauri:  Your relationship with your ex must be rocky, hence the rocky cliffs.  What once was a love boat has become a vessel of doom.  Is he the driving force behind the turmoil? Your dream is warning you that you two are on the verge of disaster and close to the point of no return if one of you doesn’t “trim your sails.”

Darcey replies:  That makes total sense. We are like fire and ice. We have shared custody of the children, who are 4 and 6 years old. It is extremely difficult for us to even converse without tension and verbal fighting. Whenever we do have an exchange, there is guaranteed fighting. We fight about their clothes and who has them, about finances, school needs, etc. Sometimes he even throws in going to court and making me pay child support or getting full custody.

Darcey’s boat dream has a pretty clear message for her.  She has allowed her ex to take control of the helm of their relationship path and is steering it rapidly to the point of no return.

The message of ship and boat dreams: You have embarked on an emotional journey, whether it be a relationship, a business venture or something else of equal significance.  Remember that the state of the water, the condition of the vessel, and how well it is traveling will clue you in to whether you should stay aboard or abandon ship.

I was also delighted to discover that this first episode covered the historic dream that Italian monk Giordano Bruno had (in the late 1500s) about the nature of the universe at a time when it was believed the sun and the planets revolved around the earth…

“When he was 30 he had the vision that would seal his fate. In this dream he awakened to a world enclosed inside a confining bowl of stars. This was the cosmos of Bruno’s time. He experienced a sickening moment of fear as if the bottom of everything was falling away beneath his feet. He summoned up his courage, ‘I spread confident wings to space and soared toward the infinite, leaving far behind what others strained to see from a distance. Here, there was no up or down, no edge or center. I saw that the sun was just another star, and the stars were other suns, each escorted by earths, like our own. The revelation of this reality was like falling in love.’ Bruno then became an evangelist, spreading the gospel of the infinity among Europe.”

He was eventually burned at the stake but that’s neither here nor there. I want to delve into the revelations and epiphanies we sometimes reach in our dreams. Bruno’s dream showed him the actual nature of the universe, long before science was able to explore it and discover it to be true.

It’s fascinating to me how – through dreaming – we are able to sometimes tap into this infinite and collective knowledge. Carl Jung called it the collective unconscious. As another example, on the night of February 17, 1869, Russian scientist Dmitri Mendeleyev went to bed frustrated by what had been puzzling him for years: how the atomic weights of the chemical elements could be grouped in some meaningful way. He dreamed, as he later recalled, of  “a table where all the elements fell into place as required.” His dream gave birth to the Periodic Table of Elements and opened a window onto the hidden structure of nature, much like Bruno’s dream.

I’m always preaching that dreaming is the deepest and most honest form of thinking that we do; that dreaming is a means of exploring our own inner universe. However, it sure seems to me, that sometimes the process of dreaming allows us to go outward into the unseen bigger universe and tap into that infinite wisdom and capture little snippets of it’s workings… and perhaps even make contact with those that have passed on and become a part of the universe themselves. Thomas Edison said he would often “grab ideas from space” in order to help him with his inventions.  So is it all out there? Or is it all inside of us? I’m still researching and learning about the powerful dreaming mind, and will probably do so the rest of my life. I’d love to know your thoughts as well as any revelations or epiphanies you had during dreaming; post them below.

** On a side note, a couple of years ago I learned that the television producers I was working with had also recently worked with Carl Sagan’s son Nick, so I reached out to him. We had a few emails back and forth about his father and about dreaming. I told him his father made me fall in love with the universe and he told me, “That’s exactly how dad saw the joy he felt at learning about science and the universe, the wonder of how we got here and where we might go, he likened it to being madly in love and wanting to tell the world.” Funny… isn’t that exactly what Giordano Bruno described in his dream above?

According to a documentary on The History Channel, on January 15, 1968, during his 39th birthday party, King told his aide Dorothy Cotton a dream he had the night before…

“I had died and no one was there. I yelled to Ralph Abernathy (a minister, civil rights leader and close friend to King), Ralph, bring those people standing there over here.”

Was this dream warning him of what was to become a reality only two and a half months later? No one can say for sure, but what is a fact is that other notable figures who made huge waves in history had dreams of their own deaths only weeks beforehand, Elvis, Princess Diana and Abraham Lincoln, just to name a few.

At 16, Patrick’s world turned. He was kidnapped and sent overseas to tend sheep as a slave in the chilly, mountainous countryside of Ireland for seven years.

According to folklore, Patrick had a dream that showed him how to escape! He found passage on a pirate ship back to Britain, where he was reunited with his family.

His dreams then told him to go back to Ireland, which he did and that is where he got ordained as a priest and spent the rest of his life

banishing snakes from Ireland and trying to convert the Irish to Christianity.
Dreams play an important role all throughout history because they are the most powerful part of who we are!

* Thomas Edison used to keep a cot in his laboratory so he could “grab ideas from space.”
* Harriet Tubman used her dreams to guide hundreds of escaped slaves to freedom through the “underground railroad.”
* Abraham Lincoln consulted his dreams on a regular basis!

Jimi Hendrix– Legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix (and one of my all time favorite musicians) once said in a 1969 interview with Musical Express, “I dream a lot and I put a lot of my dreams down as songs. I wrote one called ‘First Around the Corner’ and another called ‘The Purple Haze’, which was all about a dream I had that I was walking under the sea.” He also claims his song “Angel” was inspired by a dream where his mother came down from heaven to take him with her. Eerily, it was only a few months later that Jimi left us and joined his mother in heaven on September 18, 1970.

Harriet Tubman – When Harriet was about 12, she stepped in the path of a white owner who had hurled a lead weight at a fleeing slave. It hit her in the forehead and split open her skull. Miraculously, she survived the trauma, though she was to suffer from severe headaches and unexpected sleeping fits for the rest of her life, during which she often had visions, premonitions and dreams that established her as a strong psychic force to be reckoned with. Harriet Tubman eventually became a spiritual shamanic symbol for her people, and during her days with the Underground Railroad, was known by the name of Moses.

During one particular trek as she was guiding escaped slaves through the network of safe houses in the Underground Railroad, she suddenly collapsed and fell into a trance-like sleep and dreamt that there was great danger ahead if she followed her chosen path. When she awoke, she ordered the refugees to cross a nearby river that turned out to have shallows, never rising above their necks, thus removing their scent from the trail. Harriet later discovered that had she followed her original plan, they would have met a posse that was awaiting them.

Madam C. J. Walker – Walker was the daughter of slaves and worked as a cook and house cleaner in St. Louis, MO. Unfortunately, all of the stress and hardship took its its toll on her and she found her hair falling out. She tried several products which claimed would help her condition but to no avail. At this point Walker had a dream in which a “big Black man appeared to me and told me what to mix up for my hair. Some of the remedy was grown in Africa, but I sent for it, put it on my scalp, and in a few weeks my hair was coming in faster than it had ever fallen out.” After she shared her formula with some friends and found it successful for them as well, she realized that there were almost no hair products available for Blacks. She therefore decided to go into business, selling hair products to Black women. Her products were so successful she became the first female self-made millionaire in America!

Maya Angelou – one of the greatest poets of our time, has a recurring dream that she feels is letting her know that her work is going well. It’s a dream where she’s climbing stairs in an unfinished building. Makes sense to me! The unfinished building represents the current piece of work she is “building” and the steps let her know that she is progressing nicely. Were she going down the stairs in her dream it would be a warning that her work is digressing.

Dream Tip: You always want to find yourself going up in a dream, whether it’s going upstairs, up in an elevator or even flying as it means some area of your life is reaching higher levels!
