Ever have something strange or disturbing happen to your body in your dreams? Maybe you dreamed you had a gaping hole in your thigh or your teeth were falling out uncontrollably. No need to run to the doctor because – to your dreaming mind – all your different body parts actually represent all your different mental and emotional parts.  Your dreaming mind will give form to your mental and emotional abilities so you can better understand how well or how poorly you are using them…

Dear Lauri,
I dreamed I was washing my hands when I suddenly noticed a little 6th finger on my right hand. I wondered how long it had been there. I should have noticed it, especially since I have had that 6th toe on my right foot for awhile now. Then I remembered that my 6th toe hurts when I wear work boots. My 6th finger was painless. In waking life I have 10 fingers and 10 toes. – Trista, Wausau, WI

Lauri: Your dream begins with you washing your hands, which means there is something in waking life you don’t want to be a part of, something you are “washing your hands” of. But in the process you notice a new little finger. This suggests there is new growth within you; most likely it is growth in your ability to handle the situation. The pain in your foot that your dream is referring to is most likely emotional pain. Have you had to put your foot down and take a stand about something in waking life recently even though it was painful to do so? If so, your dream is showing you that you’ve done it before and you can do it again and this time around will be a fairly easy and pain-free process.

Trista replies: Thank you for the insightful interpretation! A year ago my boyfriend took a better paying job two hours away. He wanted me to move with him but it wasn’t so easy. I have joint custody of my older two kids who were in the middle of their school year. He ended up moving by himself leaving us in a house I couldn’t afford to rent. It was devastating. I have since moved into a smaller place, paid off my debts, and adjusted my work hours around the children’s school times. Recently, he put pressure on me again to make the move. I told him that for now it has to be ok to just see each other on the weekends. It’s not an ideal situation, but I’m comfortable with it.

Trista’s dream wasn’t about her actual physical hand but more about her emotional ability to handle her current situation.  Look at your body dreams as an X-Ray that allows you to peer deep into yourself in order to get a clearer, more descriptive picture of how functional or dysfunctional, healthy or broken all your emotional and psychological parts are.
