I must confess, I just love celebrities. My guilty pleasure is losing myself in the onslaught of celebrity gossip blogs. I can waste so much time doing this! So I find it particularly fascinating when a celebrity talks about a dream he or she has had because there is nothing more revealing about a person than what they dream… especially a recurring dream!

Recently Taylor Swift opened up to Dave Barry of Capitol FM, a radio station in the UK. One of Taylor’s recurring dreams involves her being framed for murder! Taylor confessed, “I always have nightmares that I’m being framed for murder and then I’m being framed SO well that I can’t remember if I did it or not in the dream. So that really winds me up and then I’m just freaked out for the next couple of days.”

I think this little tidbit is VERY juicy! Without having the opportunity to personally talk with Taylor (interviewing the dreamer is the best way to figure out the meaning of the dream) this is my professional assessment:

Death in dreams is usually about something coming to an end in the dreamer’s life, typically a natural ending or change that is occurring. Murder is a forced death, therefor in dreams it is often about a forced ending in waking life. Now, what we all know – and quite frankly love – about Tay Tay, is that she goes through relationships like a bag of Lays potato chips. We love this about her because her break ups inspire her songs.

These recurrent break ups are likely the murders in her dreams. There is also confusion about whether she actually committed the murders or not; she is framed for the murders. This shows us that in real life, Taylor doesn’t feel she is at fault for the break up (a break up is a forced ending, like a murder is a forced death). But as time goes on, she probably questions herself, “Hmmm. Maybe I was too clingy or too demanding,” for example (she’s framed so well she can’t remember if she actually did murder). But here’s what’s sad about it guys, feeling that she is framed for murder in the dreams might mean in real life she feels used in relationships. She feels used over and over again because she has this same dream over and over again.

Doesn’t that just make you want to hug her tight and say, “There there Taylor. Now now.”?

Dreaming of a funeral can be very disturbing. We naturally think it is an omen of something to come, but it is not. Remember, dreams speak in a symbolic language. To the dreaming mind, a funeral is not about an actual death but rather a symbolic one, an ending that has or needs to take place.

Last week I was on the air with Gravy in the morning on 105.3 in Grand Rapids, MI when his co-host Rachel told me a very upsetting dream she had about having to speak at a funeral. For me, speaking at the funeral would be more difficult than the funeral itself. Gah!! I had to do that for my grandmother’s funeral last year. You can read about that here. Anyhoo, enough about me. Aside from the funeral aspect of the dream, there are many other interesting elements to Rachel’s dream that give us a lot of insight about what has been upsetting her so much lately. Have a listen below. You’ll be amazed about how much information is hidden in this dream…

There were a couple other other pieces in this dream I didn’t get to touch on while on the air. One was the fact that the funeral setting of the dream was also letting her know it was time to put this issue with her friend “to rest.” And the fact that the dream switched to a third party perspective where Rachel was watching the funeral on TV rather than participating in it means that her dreaming mind was urging her to step out of the situation in order to gain a better perspective on it. As they say, “It’s harder to see the box when you’re in it.” Wait… that may not be the best saying to use at the moment… considering what this dream is about… ahem.

Your dreams don’t just have meaning, they also have important advice, solutions and even warnings for your life! But you won’t get those powerful made-for-you messages if you don’t know how to understand your dreams. Fear not! I’ve written three books that will help you to easily figure out your dreams every morning. Consider them dream insurance. Keeping a dream book by your bedside will ensure that the next time you wake up from a troubling or recurring dream, you can just grab the book and quickly figure it out instead of letting it bother you all day long. Now you can finally KNOW what your dreams mean!

Dreaming of Dad? You might be surprised to know that your dream may not be about him at all!

The following is an excerpt from the people chapter of my latest book Dream On It, Unlock Your Dreams, Change Your Life (St. Martin’s Press)

Traditionally, the father is the bread winner, the one that makes the decisions and wears the pants, as well as the one that tends to dole out the tougher discipline. Therefore, Dad in a dream often represents these roles within you. When you are having financial trouble, when you are faced with a tough decision, when you are having a job or career issue, or you need to assert yourself in some way during the day, don’t be surprised if dear old Dad makes an appearance in your dreams at night.

I dreamt that my father passed away, but when I visited his home he was there and helped me make his funeral arrangements. – Jamie 28

Lauri: Unless you are concerned for your father’s health in real life, this dream is not about him at all. Your father is likely standing in for your own “inner father,” meaning the part of you that makes decisions and that brings home the bacon. For your father to die in a dream suggests that you may feel your ability to make a good firm decision or your ability to bring home the bacon and manage said bacon is no longer available to you. So what’s the story? The way he helps you make the funeral arrangements leads me to believe this is about finances. Even though you may feel your financial savvy is dead in the water, your dreaming mind is reassuring you – through the form of your dad – that this part of you is alive and well. Your dream is also showing you that financial – rather than funeral – planning and arranging is the key. You can do it. Don’t be so quick to bury this part of you.

Jamie replies: I was feeling very “stuck” in my financial situation. I am a full time student, have a full-time job, and 2 little ones at home. It makes complete sense that I was trying to tell myself that I could find ways to lessen my burden through financial planning and arranging. And sure enough, when I started looking for alternative ways to earn a bit of extra cash I stopped having the dream!

Keep in mind, the father symbol is not meant to be sexist. Whether or not it’s true in an individual’s family, it’s true as a universal archetype. Even if one doesn’t perceive men as money makers and decision makers, it is the cultural norm, and the subconscious often subscribes to norms. I’ve found that men and women tend to dream of their father equally when facing financial issues. This archetype may change in time as more and more women take on the role of financial provider in the home. But for now, as far as the dreaming mind is concerned, Dad is the money man.

For men who are fathers, Dad in a dream often refers to his own role as a father, just as a woman’s mother in a dream can refer to her role as Mom. So Dads, the same rule applies to you. Any negative element to the dream is likely a reflection of your own frustrations with fatherhood. If you are not yet a father but are trying or hoping to be, you’re going to be dreaming of your own father quite a bit.

***

I hope you enjoyed this excerpt from Dream On It. The people chapter also covers even more about Dad as well as: Mother, Unknown Men and Women, Baby, Child, Celebrities, Boss, Doctor, Police, Classmate… and more!

Remember a couple blogs back when I explained why we’re all sick freaks in our dreams? Well, here’s another shining example of sick freakdom within a dream. But this time, instead of incest… it’s about murder!

If you’ve ever turned into a homicidal maniac in your dream, you’ve probably tried to figure out what to do with the body as well. The two do go hand in hand, I suppose.

This past Wednesday I was a guest on Gravy in the Morning on Hot 105.3 in Grand Rapids, MI (as I am every Wednesday) when the host, Gravy, told me about his murder dream. BTW, this photo is from America’s Next Top Model’s “Murder Victim” photoshoot…

What’s interesting to me about Gravy’s murder dream is that he didn’t have much concern over what to do with the body, when trying to hide the body is actually a very common concern in murder dreams. When we try to hide the body in our dreams, that means that we’re really hoping we can keep the waking life issue private, and Gravy obviously didn’t mind talking about his gambling issue therefore there is no need to hide the evidence in the dream.

Another important element of Gravy’s dream that we didn’t have time to touch on was the murder weapon. The type of weapon used in a dream murder, just like in a real life murder, is a big clue that holds answers as well. Gravy’s weapon of choice was a knife as he said he had stabbed the woman. This tells us that he was more than willing to “take a stab” at ending his gambling but that it was also something he needed to “cut” from his life.

You see how every single detail in a dream is a clue as to what the whole message is? Being able to understand the messages in your dreams is a much bigger deal than you think. Dreams have so much to say about your waking life. Every single piece of your dream is a message. When you can figure it out and piece it all together you can really see how good or bad your decisions are, you can see what you may be doing wrong in your relationships, you can see what you need to remove from your life, you can get great ideas for your art or music or projects… the answers and directions you can get from your dreams are endless because you get brand new ones every single morning! How cool is that?

If you want to be able to figure your dreams out for yourself, you can get yourself a copy of one of my books. Or you can get a private reading with me (the best in the business). We can do it via email or phone. In a reading with me, I explain every single part of your dream, show you what issue in your life it is connected to and even reveal the warning or answer your dream holds for you. Like I said, being able to understand your dreams is much bigger deal than you think.
