A kissing dream can be just as exciting or as troublesome as a sex dream…

Dear Lauri,
I was sitting in a room filled with sand and there were beautiful, red and purple Persian rugs with my cousin’s picture on them. I tried to walk to one of them to get a better look but the sand was really hard to navigate. As I got stuck, my cousin appeared and for some freaky reason we got into a hot and heavy make out session. By the way, I would never make out with my cousin!

Lauri:  Interesting. Usually, making out in a dream can be connected to intimate conversation in waking life because, like kissing, it takes two mouths to communicate. Do you need to or have you recently had an important or intimate conversation with your  cousin? If not, then your cousin may represent someone you need to have a deep conversation with or something you need to have a deep conversation about. To figure that out, ask yourself what three things first come to mind when you think of your cousin. Can you associate any of those things with yourself or with your current circumstances?

The rugs could be a reference to sweeping something under the rug, rather than discussing it. Getting stuck in the sand suggests you are feeling stuck somewhere in real life, something isn’t progressing. Sand can refer to time. Is something taking a long time to change or happen? Whatever it is, sweeping the issue under the rug certainly won’t help the matter. I think your dream is telling you it is TIME for conversation.

Kat replies: Aha! Yesterday was my brother’s birthday and I haven’t talked to him in years. I was feeling bad about the lack of communication in my extended family which includes my cousin that I used to be very close to and talk to a lot. And, this family won’t budge. Nobody will apologize and make an effort so we are stuck right where we are. Whew. At least, I am not a sick freak that wants to make out with my cousin!!!

Kat’s in good company. We’re all sick freaks in our dreams, after all! It’s funny how, in dreams, we seem to have no moral boundaries, isn’t it? Murder, incest, kidnapping can all seem perfectly normal in the dream world. The reason why is because the brain is working much differently while we are in the dream state than it does when we’re awake. For example, the part of the Prefrontal Cortex that controls rational, linear thought is dormant. This is one of the reasons that dreams are symbolic rather than literal. Therefore kissing is symbolic of intimate conversation. Murder is symbolic of putting an end to something you no longer need or want, etc.

When you can understand the symbolism in your dreams, they wont freak you out anymore. Instead, you’ll be able to see that they are very deeply connected to what is going on in your current life and, what’s more, like Kat’s dream, they are giving you extremely important messages you need to know to improve your behavior, your relationships, your current issues and your life! Every Wednesday I get to dissect a sex or relationship dream for my friends at Em and Lo: Sex, Love and Everything In Between This week’s dream is from a gal who is wondering why she’s dreaming of kissing her childhood ex…

I keep having a dream where I meet up with my childhood boyfriend at the beach. We greet and hug each other hello and spend the day together. Later that evening we go out to dinner and take a stroll along the beach laughing and enjoying each other’s company. We retire for the night in separate rooms where neither of us can sleep or stop thinking about the other. He calls me on my cell and we arrange for him to come up to my room where we sip some wine and enjoy the view of the ocean from the balcony and continue to talk and eventually share the most passionate kiss I’ve ever had. Then the dream ends. I have had this dream several nights in a row for the past three months. What does this mean?

Lauri: Since your dream has been happening for about 3 months now it is connected to something in your life that has been going on for about 3 months. Let’s look at the different elements of the dream and see if we can figure it out for you. Your childhood boyfriend is not necessarily playing himself but rather is standing in for either A) excitement and passion because he is the first person you probably ever felt excitement and passion for, even as a child or B) your childlike, carefree, fun-loving self.

In the dream you can’t stop thinking about each other. What in real life have you not been able to stop thinking about? Has something been going on for about three months now that has been exciting and made you feel like that young fun-loving girl from your childhood? Is something going on that you’re really passionate about? Or is this something you need to bring into your life? Are you in a relationship that needs to be rejuvenated? That may be why your dream is using your childhood boyfriend as he could represent a fun, youthful relationship where everything feels new and exciting again.

The point at which a dream ends (naturally rather than by an alarm) is the main message of the dream. Your dream always seems to end with a kiss. Kisses in dreams are really about communication in real life because – like kissing – it requires two mouths to communicate. Your cell phone in your dream also represents communication so it seems that you’ve either been communicating very well with someone lately or you need to communicate what you need in order to bring this fun and excitement back into your life.

First, I must start off by saying, I used to be extremely happy, adventurous, and enjoyed simple outdoors trips and getaways. I have been married for five years, but we’ve been together for eleven and one-half years. For the last three years I have been unhappy and for the last three months, I have been struggling with something. My husband and I have not been getting along very well (there are other issues also), and I have been trying to find a way to tell him that I want a divorce. I have been longing for the old “me” when I was fun-loving, full of excitement, and truly happy. In the last three months, I have been coping with my own feelings and emotions trying to make sure that I was making the right decision and that this was something that I really wanted. This time period has been very stressful and emotional. I have since had a discussion with my husband, and although he is not very happy, I feel so relieved and I have not had the dream reoccur to date. I am confident that my life will be better.
