Since Hurricane Isaac just stormed through my neck of the woods and is now on his way to the coast of MS and LA I thought it would be fitting to explore what the weather in our dreams means, particularly hurricanes. The following is an excerpt from the weather chapter of my latest book Dream On It, Unlock Your Dreams Change Your Life…

Tornado and hurricane dreams both reflect the storm of worry that fill our mind from time to time. But there is a distinct difference between the meaning of a hurricane dream versus the meaning of a tornado dream, and the difference lies in the nature of the storms. A tornado is unpredictable, and you can see it coming but you never know if you will wind up in its path or not. A hurricane covers a broad area and its main characteristic is its powerful wind. And the wind is the key to the meaning of this dream. To the dreaming mind, wind represents the forceful changes that blow through our lives, “the winds of change” so to speak. When the wind in your dream is threatening, such as the winds of a hurricane, then the changes that are happening in waking life are upsetting you.

I dreamed my husband and I were trapped in a grocery store during a hurricane and could not find our son. It really bothered me.
– Chrissy 30

Lauri: Your inner mind must be feeling that you aren’t spending enough time with your son for some reason and that is where the missing comes in to play. You “miss” him. The hurricane tells us a big change has blown into your life, a change involving your son that is upsetting to you. This all takes place in a grocery store because you are hungry for the emotional nourishment your relationship with him provides.

Chrissy replies: My son just started kindergarten so you are right. We do not have the time together anymore that we are used to and I have been having a hard time adjusting.

Even though we love to watch our children grow and develop, a part of us resists the changes because it means that, before we know it, our baby will be an adult and no longer in need of our cuddles and care. Chrissy’s dream reflects her inner awareness of how fast the changes her son is going through are blowing through her life.

The message of hurricane dreams: The winds of change are upon you and are causing you a tremendous amount of upset. The more you resist the changes the more difficult they become just as it is harder to walk against the wind than with it. Rather than evacuate these hurricane force winds of change, prepare for it and withstand it. And remember, the eye or center of the hurricane is the calmest point, if you can center yourself you too will find peace despite the changes whirling around you.

Weather changes from one day to the next, even from one moment to the next, and so do our emotions. To the dreaming mind, our emotions are the weather conditions that form and flow within our psyche. Just as a meteorologist tracks the weather in order to keep us informed and prepared to handle the days ahead, so should we track and understand our psychological weather to keep us informed and prepared to handle our lives If you pay attention, your own dreaming mind will give you the most accurate and reliable emotional forecast available.

The weather chapter of Dream On It also covers: Tornadoes, Hurricanes, Rain, Floods, Lightning, Snow, Ice, Sun, and Rainbows

Your dreams don’t just have meaning, they also have important advice, solutions and even warnings for your life! But you won’t get those powerful made-for-you messages if you don’t know how to understand your dreams. Fear not! I’ve written three books that will help you to easily figure out your dreams every morning. Consider them dream insurance. Keeping a dream book by your bedside will ensure that the next time you wake up from a troubling or recurring dream, you can just grab the book and quickly figure it out instead of letting it bother you all day!

“I had a crazy, disturbing dream. When I awoke, I was frightened. I’m glad I have your books!

When I first read about Robin William’s suicide, I immediately thought of the suicides in my family… not even a year has passed since the most recent one. Sigh. Depression can take even the best of us down. It is not to be taken lightly. It is a monster, a big, powerful, unrelenting monster. Depression will come and go. It is rarely a constant in the life of one who suffers from it so it is important to manage it as best you can, stay one step ahead of it if possible.

In my research, as a dream analyst, and in my own experiences I have found that our dreams will often give those of us that suffer from depression a heads up when another bout is on the way, making it a tad easier to manage. If you suffer from depression, look for these symbols, or variations of them, in your dreams:

Your dreams being void of color and in shades of grey.
– In dreams colors can symbolize your current emotional state. Yellow can represent fear, red can represent anger. Blue can point to the blues, but it is more a situational blues such as being blue over your best friend moving away rather than a full on depression. Overwhelming grey in a dream is more often a tell tale sign of depression as it indicates a lack of vibrancy in your mind.

Frequent falling and/or drowning dreams.
– When falling or drowning you are going down and that’s the operative word here, down. Depression brings you down. It is heavy. It’s like an elephant sitting on you. And it can feel like falling or drowning, like there is nothing to support you. Your emotions, your thoughts, your hopes, everything just keeps going down, down, down. Dreams bring to life what is going on in the psyche.

Something submerged below the surface of water about to emerge.
– This is one I get a lot, usually it is an alligator below the surface of the water but it has been other nondescript things. In this sort of dream the surface of the water would represent your emotional surface and the creature or object just below it is the depression getting ready to rise and show its ugly self beyond your ability to keep it pushed down.

Shadows and dark rooms.
– Dark rooms often symbolize the darkness within yourself. Often, a person will dream of a house that has a dark room in it (not the type of dark room that is used for photography but rather a room with no light) and the person is afraid to go in there. Sometimes they are feeling pushed in there by an unseen force. This dream is a big time warning that your dark depression needs you to focus on it so you can manage it. Shadows in dreams can often represent the part of the self that we consider our dark side, the Heisenberg to our Walter White, so to speak. If the shadow is becoming threatening to you in your dream, and it is a frequent dream then this could be your depression beginning to take over.

Rain and storms.
– Rain in dreams is a classic symbol for tears in real life, often tears you have not allowed yourself to shed. We all have situations that cause us to be sad but if the rain in your dream is frequent and especially if it’s a torrential downpour, this could be your depression getting ready to drench your psyche once again.

Obviously, we are all different and can have our own personal symbols for depression in our dreams but the ones mentioned above are fairly common. Often, they will show up in your dreams as a warning because your body is telling you a bout of depression is on the way. This will allow you to prepare for it. You can plan to spend some time outside with friends. Surround yourself with people who make your laugh. Go see a funny movie or volunteer. Helping others can do wonders for your psyche and your soul!

There are also times when you are already in the throws of darkness when these dreams happen. At that point your dreaming mind is merely showing you what the inside of your mind looks like. A picture is worth a thousand words, as they say. Sometimes seeing yourself in a different perspective can help you to make better decisions regarding your depression. Ug. I don’t want to be void of color on the inside. I really should get help, for example. These are the times you need to tell someone what’s going on with you. They will want to help you!

Most depressions don’t end in suicide, but enough of them do that we all need to take depression more seriously. If you have depression DO NOT BE EMBARRASSED to tell someone. At the very least, you can call a depression hotline. I Googled it so I could put one here in the post but there were so many! There is help everywhere so ask for it. Depression CAN be managed. Things can get better.

* If you’re having disturbing dreams, I would be honored to help you. I’m the best in the business and can help you fully understand every part of your dream, find the issue that is causing the dream and the message and guidance your dream is giving you. Getting your dream analyzed is a far bigger deal than you may realize! It goes deep and can absolutely change your life!

* I also have a very thorough dream book called Dream On It, Unlock Your Dream Change Your Life that will help you easily learn how the dreaming mind works, how to connect your dream to what is going on in your life and how to find the message. It also has a dream dictionary in the back for easy reference. This book has been featured on Dr. Oz 3 times! You’ll be glad you have it on your bedside next time you have a strange or upsetting dream.

As you know, the weather has been crazy lately. With all the flooding and tornadic activity these days, you can’t help but worry. And all that worry can lend itself to turbulent dreams! The following is an excerpt from the Weather Dreams chapter of my latest book Dream On It, Unlock Your Dreams, Change Your Life

Weather changes from one day to the next, even from one moment to the next, and so do our emotions. To the dreaming mind, our emotions are the weather conditions that form and flow within our psyche. Just as a meteorologist tracks the weather in order to keep us informed and prepared to handle the days ahead, so should we track and understand our psychological weather to keep us informed and prepared to handle our lives. If you pay attention, your own dreaming mind will give you the most accurate and reliable emotional forecast available.

Tornadoes

When putting this chapter together, I searched all my client files, went through all my published newspaper columns, scanned my members’ forum for various weather dreams and discovered that almost all of the weather dreams I had accumulated were of tornadoes! So I put out a query to my newsletter members soliciting for weather dreams in hopes of getting more variations, and of all the dreams sent in… almost all were still of tornadoes. Sigh. Needless to say, the tornado is an image imbedded deeply and firmly within our collective psyche.

The nature of the approaching tornado is what I believe makes it such a popular dream symbol. If you’ve ever actually experienced a tornado, or even just watched one on TV, it is the waiting and wondering over the uncertainty of its path that impacts you the most, “Which way is it going to go? Is it going to hit my house? How bad will it be? How long until it gets here?” The element of bracing for possible disaster is what plays the biggest role in the meaning behind the tornado dream.

I have had recurring dreams of tornadoes for as long as I can remember. Last night I had a dream that I was in a trailer by myself. There was a horrible storm and then a tornado appeared out of nowhere! The windows started breaking because of the hail. Then the trailer was actually picked up by the tornado and landed safely in another state! – Nancy 36

Lauri: Lifelong recurring tornado dreams are a good indication you are a proud, card-carrying member of the worry-wart club. You’ll find that your tornado dreams are likely to coincide with your bouts of worry or panic. You’ll also find that your bouts of worry are often over something that you cannot control, just as no one can control a tornado, it is an act of God. In this latest dream you are in a trailer, which is the weakest structure you could be in during a tornado. This means you are not feeling very strong at the moment. Then your trailer winds up in another state! Your dream is telling you that you need to move on from this worrisome “state” of mind. Sometimes you’ve gotta let go and let things play themselves out naturally. When you can move into this more relaxed state of mind, your tornado dreams will have no reason to come back.

Nancy replies: Yes I am a worrywart. I worry about everything!! I will have to start keeping track of when I have the dreams and what I am worried about at the time. I always had a feeling that’s what it meant.

As frightening as tornado dreams can be, they are actually good for you because they are alerting you to the fact that you are letting your worry and anxiety get the best of you… and it is often worry and anxiety over something that may not even cross your path. Your dream is showing you your own worry in the form of a tornado so that you can understand the destructive force it has on your psyche.

Grab your copy of Dream On It, Unlock Your Dreams, Change Your Life right here.
It’s been really great and helped me understand all my dreams. It’s been eye-opening and all the girls in my office want to borrow it. I love how she writes and breaks everything down into simple terms.” – Heather, Wichita, KS
