I am always saying, “Nothing in a dream is random. Every single detail in your dream is important and can be connected to something in your waking life.” This is particularly true when it comes to numbers and amounts of things in dreams… but of course, they are the trickiest to figure out!

In my book Dream on It, Unlock your Dreams Change Your Life, I cover numbers and amounts in dreams. it is in my last chapter entitled Rules To Remember. Here is an excerpt:
“Rule 8. Numbers and amounts in a dream are directly connected to that same number or amount in waking life. If a certain numbers shows up in a dream, then you need to put on your thinking cap and go through all the numbers in your life such as birth dates, addresses, salary, how many years you’ve been married, etc. odds are, you’ll be able to connect it to something in which case you’ll then need to ask yourself how that connection – if you connect the number in your dream to your ex boyfriend’s address, for example – is relevant to your life right now. Do the same thing when there is a specific amount of something in your dream. If you dream of three eggs, then there are likely going to be three ideas or projects in your waking life that are about to hatch.”

Recently, Katie from Chattanooga had a very specific amount of change in her dream and wanted to know what it might mean. Her dream illustrates this rule beautifully:

Dear Lauri,

I had a dream about my Dad who has passed away over 21 years ago. I’m walking towards him. He’s telling me everything is okay. There are bleachers on one side of us and a big lake on the other. He puts out his hand to me and opens it and there are two quarters and three dimes. – Katie 45, Chattanooga, TN

Lauri: The lake on one side may be the part of you that feels at peace and reflective. The bleachers on the other side may be the part of you that is feeling judged or watched. What your father shows you in his hand is very interesting. His hand is the part of you that is like him that can handle whatever difficulty is going on in your life right now. The coins could represent “change” that needs to or has been made. But more specifically the two quarters could represent half of a whole. Are you feeling divided in some way? The three dimes could represent three of something… do you have three kids? How is three significant to you? But also, together that all makes 80. So do a little thinking and see if 80 means anything to you. Was your father 80? Anything significant happen in 1980? Has anything of significance cost $80? Think along those lines and you may be able to make the connection. When you do, you have found the message!

Katie replies: All of this makes sense to me. I do feel I’m being judged very often because of my addiction, which is how I’m a lot like my father. And I can now handle the change going on in my life that had to be made for me to survive. I’m a recovering addict of 9 months. I do have three children and they are my everything and besides myself I’m doing this for them. Two of my children are adults but my nine year old, who needs me still, our favorite song is 1980. (By the group Rehab, of all names). My love for him and my desire to raise him in a loving and sound home is what drives me daily to stay sober. And this may sound crazy.. I had exactly $80 in my pocket when i decided I was done with my life of addiction and chose to turn my life around. Wow! That is quite the connection. Awesome.

How cool is that? The amount of change in Katie’s dream had a VERY powerful connection. And now that she can understand the connection, it will make her recovery even more meaningful.

Being able to not only remember but understand your dreams will bring clarity to your life. You will develop a much deeper understanding of yourself, your behavior and of the world and the people around you. Problems and difficulties can be solved with confidence and ease. That’s why when we have a tough issue to figure out we say, “let me sleep on it.” What we’re really saying is, “Let me Dream On It!” Grab your copy of my latest book Dream On It today and understand your dreams like never before

“I love Dream On It! I have referred to it for a different reason every single day since I got it. It’s been very eye-opening and all the girls in my office want to borrow it. I love how Lauri writes and breaks everything down into simple terms.” – Heather, Wichita, KS

In the last 25 years we’ve been learning a lot about the importance of sleep and the harmful effects of not getting enough. In my professional opinion, one of the biggest detriments to a lack of sleep, besides not being able to function at your best and feeling lousy, is the lack of dreaming.

Whether you remember your dreams or not, you enter the dreaming stage of sleep (REM) every 90 minutes throughout the night. Dreaming not only serves the purpose of memory retention, but also serves as a means of figuring out your current issues, coming up with creative ideas and even expressing thoughts and emotions you suppress during waking hours.

I will share with you 3 of my proven tricks to remembering your dreams (we all average 4 to 5 dreams per night) and understanding them. Plus, I’ll give you 3 effective tips to getting a good night’s sleep… You’re not going to get any dreams if you aren’t getting any sleep! Sleeping and dreaming are two of your most powerful built-in resources for a healthier and happier life. Your company and I don’t want you to miss out on either of them anymore.

3 Tips For Better Sleep

* No caffeine after lunch. Caffeine stays in your system for about 6 hours and can even cause sleep problems up to 10 to 12 hours after drinking it!

* No computer, phone or TV within 1 hour of bedtime. Lights from the TV, the screen on your phone and your computer’s monitor are stimulants to your brain and will keep it alert a good hour after these devices are turned off.

* Keep your bedroom cool and dark. Every night around midnight your body temperature naturally drops about one degree. Your body cools down to promote inactivity and sleep. Give it a head start by keeping your bedroom at a nice cool temperature. And have your bedroom as dark as possible so that you experience the daytime/nighttime cycle. Light may disrupt your body’s normal circadian rhythm and signal you to wake up.

3 Tips To Understand Your Dreams

* When you wake up, don’t move. This is the key to remembering your dreams. When you wake up, whether it is in the middle of the night or if it’s for good in the morning, you must not move. Stay in the position you woke up in because that is the position you were dreaming in and if you move you disconnect yourself from the dream. Just remain in that position for about 90 seconds, quiet your mind and let your dream come back to you. You’ll be amazed how well this works!

* Title your dream as if it were a movie. You are the writer, director, producer and star of your dream production, so give it a title deserving of the blockbuster it is! Try to sum up your entire dream in one sentence, preferably 5 words or less. Sometimes, giving your dream a title is all it takes to suddenly realize the meaning.

* Compare the events in your dream to what happened the previous day. Your dreams at night will ALWAYS be connected to what happened the previous day. You’ll find that any struggle you face in your dreams tonight will seem very similar to something you struggled with today. Anything you accomplish today will bare a striking resemblance to something you manage to do in your dream tonight.

Dreams are so very powerful and have so so much information inside of them, when you know how to understand them. My latest book is very thorough and will teach you how the dreaming mind works. It’s been so effective that it has been featured on Dr. Oz, the Today Show, Fox Business, Steve Harvey and more! It also includes a chapter on animals in dreams and how they are connected to our behaviors and instincts. Once you’ve read Dream on It you’ll never look at your dreams the same again! It also makes a FANTASTIC gift for anybody!

Want to read Dream on It right now? It’s available on Nook and Kindle!

“This book was given to me as a gift and I love it! I could hardly put it down. I refer back to it often to interpret my dreams now. I loved it so much I recommend it to everyone I know.” – Mel Martin

In my career, I’ve been lucky enough to do appearances on morning drive radio all over the country, which has provided me the opportunity to talk to thousands upon thousands of people about their dreams. I’ve done just over 3600 appearances thus far, and in the majority of those I get asked about that horrifying dream where a dark shadowy figure, demon or ghost comes into the bedroom and begins sucking the very life out of you, rendering you unable to breath… or scream… If this sounds familiar to you, then you MUST read on. The following is from my syndicated weekly newspaper column The Dream Zone.

Dear Lauri,
I keep having a dream that something is trying to possess me. Every time it tries to get inside me, or once it just lay on top of me and I can’t move or speak. I can just scream in my head to go away or to get off of me. The first time I had to yell in my head “I love God and God loves me” this dream scares me so bad and I have had it three times. The last time was earlier this week. Please help! – Amber 25, Salt Lake City, UT

Lauri: This is not a dream… nor is it a demonic possession. It is actually a fascinating physiological experience called Sleep Paralysis, or The Old Hag Syndrome! And there is not a thing one should worry about when it happens. Here’s the deal, when we sleep and enter the REM state, which is when dreaming takes place, our brain releases a chemical that literally paralyzes our skeletal muscles so that we don’t act out our dreams. When we’ve had a fitful night of sleep or haven’t slept long enough, we will start to wake up before our brain can re-activate our muscle control, which causes us to get “stuck” in that in between state of sleep and wakefulness, called Hypnogogia. Cool name, huh? In this state you are asleep and awake at the same time, which is why you are aware that you are in your room and in your bed. This is also why you can’t move, speak or scream… because you are still paralyzed! It is mostly physiological and will subside in a moment or two. It is not harmful in any way and does not mean there is anything wrong with you. No need to call your priest! The cure is to try to simply get more sleep and get negative issues off your mind before bedtime.

<script type="text/javascript"

Amber replies: That sounds exactly what is happening to me! I will definitely try to write out my negative thoughts before bed and hope that it helps! Thank you!!

What I also HIGHLY suggest to folks, the next time they experience Sleep Paralysis, is to take advantage of it… because it’s a actually a way cool state of mind, being asleep and awake at the same time, a foot in both worlds so to speak. The next time it happens, rather than trying to scream or pray, ask the creature in your room “Who are you? And what do you want?” You will get an answer! Or you could have fun with it and ask the creature, “What is the meaning of life?” and see what sort of answer you get. Or you could even will your self to float up out of bed. It’s a cool feeling. Essentially, when you are in this hypnogogic state, you can easily turn it into a lucid dream and direct the dream to happen anyway you like. You can use it for insight into your waking life problems (by asking questions) or you can use it just for fun. Whichever you decide, I can assure you that now that you know what is going on, it won’t be nearly as frightening the next time it happens, and in fact, can become quite the powerful tool to explore the inner workings of your mind.

Dreams are powerful things! In fact, they are the most powerful part of who we are. Whether your dreams are advising you, warning you or inspiring you, they are an endless resource you can tap into every single morning… once you know their secret language! My dream books will have you understanding your dreams in no time! Keep them by your bedside so you can easily figure out your dreams as soon as you wake from them. You’ll wonder why you didn’t get them sooner!

We all dream and we all wonder what our dreams mean. No doubt you’ve woken up on a number of occasions scratching your head over the dream you just experienced. And discussing it with friends, family and co-workers may have brought you more confusion than clarity, huh? Well, scratch thy head no more! I am going to share with you three powerful tips that will help you go into the new year as a better dream interpreter.

1. Keep A Dream Journal In Tandem With A Day Journal

Whatever happens in your life today, whatever thought runs through your mind, whatever accomplishment you make, whatever conversations you have, whatever frustrates you today is likely to show up in your dreams tonight in some form or fashion.

Keeping a day journal in tandem with a dream journal will help you to connect the dots between the imagery in your dream to the events and thoughts and conversations of the previous day. Write down all TV shows, books, etc. that you read, saw or talked about that day. You never know when your dream will borrow something you saw or read in order to help it make its message.

2. Identify Yourself And Your Behavior In The Dream

When we dream, we go inward and focus on the self. Think about it, your eyes are closed, your room is dark, the outside world is shut off, so YOU go in to yourself and focus on YOU and all the things that YOU are dealing with right now.

Our dreams will show us ourselves in the guise of different people or animals or even objects so that we can gain a better understanding of ourselves and our current behavior.

Everything in your dream is you. The exception to this rule is when you dream of someone you deal with closely on a daily basis, such as your roommate, your spouse, your boyfriend or girlfriend, your children, your co-worker. The best way to determine if someone in your dream is playing his or herself, rather than representing some aspect of you, is to ask yourself if there is a current concern or issue you have with the person or are they involved in the same situation with you. If the answer is no, then odds are, the person is indeed a representation of some part of you.

So start with yourself first – how is this creature, this person, this object like me? What three words first come to mind when you think of that person, creature, etc.? Can you connect any of the words you chose to yourself and your life and behavior right now? If the dots don’t connect, then work outward. How is this creature, this person, this object like my spouse? My best friend? My child? Etc. Do this and those dots are sure to connect. There is always a link. Nothing and no one in your dream is random.

3. Dreams Speak In Metaphors

“She’s the apple of my eye.” “Dad was boiling mad.” “He’s the black sheep of the family.” Metaphors compare two seemingly unlike things in order to make a point. Our dreams work the same way, which is one of the reasons they are often so bizarre. Make it a habit of asking yourself how the characters, the objects, the actions and the settings in your dreams are comparable to yourself and the events in your waking life. How is your dream last night a metaphor for your life right now or for how your day went yesterday? Does the raging storm in last night’s dream seem like the current state of your marriage? Does winning the lottery in your dream remind you of how you felt when you recently got that promotion? Like a metaphor, your dreams illustrate what’s going on in your life and how you truly feel about it. When you can find the metaphor, you have found the message.

When you can understand your dreams, you’ll find that they are the best glimpse of reality available. They are the way you are brutally honest with yourself when your conscious waking mind refuses to be. They are the way you nag yourself over a recurring behavior you need to correct or an issue you aren’t giving enough attention to, hence the persistent recurring dream. They are also your very best friend and advisor when you need to make a tough decision or solve a difficult problem. No one truly knows what is best for you… than YOU! So why not go into this new year with a new and deeper understanding of your self? When you can understand your dreams, you can change your life!
