Now you’re awake, unsettled, and every dream site says the same thing: “losing direction in life.” But that explanation doesn’t touch why YOUR car disappeared, or why the search felt so desperate.

In my many years of research I’ve found that the most commonly misplaced item in a dream is not your car keys but rather… your car! Seems kinda crazy that it would be so common to dream of losing something so huge, doesn’t it? Read on and it will all make perfect sense…

Dear Lauri,
I have had several dreams in the last year where I am lost. For example, I was in my church where I have gone since I was a little girl and can’t find my way out. When I finally do come out I cannot find my vehicle. – Amanda 30, Decatur, IN

Lauri: Losing your car or discovering that your car has been stolen is actually a pretty common dream theme, so common in fact that you are the third person who reported having that dream to me today! Your car represents your drive and motivation to continue to move forward in some area. Less often your car can represent a direction you are headed in. To lose it may mean you are losing your motivation or are feeling directionless and just don’t know how to proceed. In addition, being lost in a dream means something in waking life is causing you to feel directionless and/or uncertain as to what to do. So you’ve got yourself a double whammy of uncertainty here in your dream. However, the church setting is a friendly suggestion you are sending yourself not to lose faith right now.

Amanda replies: Wow. You hit the nail on the head. I can’t find a job so I get discouraged… a lot. I worry I’ll never get back on my feet again and won’t be able to provide for my kids. This is encouraging. I will take my dream’s advice and keep the faith! Thank you.

In the dream world we often find ourselves operating, riding in or encountering various vehicles, just like in the real world. And just like in the real world, dream vehicles crash! Because dreams often seem and feel so real, and the emotions we experience in the dream are definitely real, it’s understandable that crash dreams can make us worry that, due to some sort of warp in the time-space continuum, we may be dreaming of a future event.

This is so so so not true! Dreams are about what is going on in your life RIGHT NOW. And what’s more, dreams are symbolic. So the vehicle in your dream is not about an actual vehicle you drive to work or to the corner bar, it’s symbolic of your ability to progress in your life; your ability to move toward a goal or even your ability to move on from the past. And when a vehicle crashes in your dream, it reflects that something in your life that was previously moving along quite nicely has suddenly become a mess.

The following dream illustrates this perfectly. It is from my nationally syndicated newspaper column The Dream Zone…

Dear Lauri,
I just had a horrific dream that I saw a pickup truck speed past me and drive right into a train. I covered my daughter’s eyes from seeing the crash that happened right in front of us. After the impact I went to the police station and the dispatcher said that someone already reported it. Oh but the truck made it thru the train but it was all broken up. And not sure but the man driving the truck was singing really loud and I could hear him as he drove by. – Sigourney 28, Ottawa, OH

Lauri: The crash represents something that has recently and greatly impacted you, something that came “crashing” into your life metaphorically. Why a train? It could mean that this issue has crashed into your normal “train” of thought. Is it on your mind a lot? Or it could mean that you felt you were on “the right track” until this mess happened. It is important that it is a pickup truck in the dream as opposed to another type of vehicle because it is a message that you need to “pick up” and carry on.

Sigourney replies: Wow. That is so exact! Last week I went to my apartment that I hadn’t been staying at due to flood damage and found out I had been robbed! Literally everything was gone: books, pictures off of the walls, sheets, blankets, all of my daughter’s clothes, you get the hint. The robbery is all I have been thinking of. And now that you say all of that, I have been “covering” my daughter from this. In the dream I covered her eyes and in waking life I haven’t allowed her to really see what’s going on. But you’re right, now it’s all about picking up pieces and waiting for insurance to come thru so I can get new furniture because we have nothing left. That is amazing. Thank you!

Notice how Sigourney was not behind the wheel of either of the vehicles that crashed? That’s an important detail as well and it is because she had no involvement in the breaking in of her apartment. She does, unfortunately, have to deal with the aftermath. Good luck Sigourney. And remember, in the long winding road of life, this is merely a pothole.

How many times have you woken up from a dream and wondered what it could mean? How many times have you told your crazy dreams to others hoping someone might have an idea of its meaning? I’ll bet you do that a lot. Guess what? You don’t have to wonder about your dreams anymore! Imagine waking up from a weird dream and being able to understand it. Imagine being able to recognize the important made-just-for-you message hidden in youe dream. You CAN!!

My latest book Dream On It teaches you how the dreaming mind works. It will teach you how certain dream themes are connected to the different parts of YOU. For example, dreams about animals are really about YOUR behavior. Dreams about other people are really about different parts of YOUR personality. It’s not only fun to be able to figure out your dreams, it can be life changing!

“I bought the book on Sunday and read it in two days! I loved it. It is so insightful to how our minds work. I truly find it enlightening how much we can learn about ourselves if we pay close enough attention to our dreams.” – Erin P.

Without a doubt, the car is the most common mode of transportation we dream of because it is the most common vehicle used. Therefore its meaning is broader than say, a boat or a plane. The car dream can be a commentary on how you are maneuvering through a specific life path, such as your career or relationship oath. It can also be reflective of your “drive” or motivation to continue on down a certain road. It is always important to pay attention to whether you are the one behind the wheel or not as that points to who – or even what part of you – is in control of the direction your life is taking.

The specifics of the dream, such as the type or condition of the car as well as the condition of the road and how well you are driving will help you to zero in on which life path it is connected to. Crashing is the most common element to the car dream that I’ve discovered in my research. It often means that some direction your life has taken has come to a sudden and messy stop. And then there’s the fender bender dream, which is connected to a waking life issue that isn’t quite as dire but still needs your attention.

Last week I was on 105.3 Hot FM in Grand Rapids, MI with Gravy and Rachael in the morning. Rachael told me about a fender bender dream she had that was commenting on a very important road she had chosen to go down…

As you can see from Rachael’s dream, her situation of being stuck in the middle as far as her parents and future in laws isn’t as dire as a crash but is more like a fender bender: an aggravation that has stopped her in her tracks for a bit, an aggravation that does need to be addressed but also an aggravation that she can move on from just as one can still drive their car after a fender bender.

Like Rachael’s dream, your dreams have a really cool way of showing you your current issues in the form of a symbolic and meaningful metaphor too. This allows you to gain a better understanding of the big picture so that you can make better decisions. And better decisions make for a better life! My latest book Dream On It, Unlock Your Dreams Change Your Life will help you understand your dreams like never before. It will help you see your dreams as messages rather than nonsense. PLUS IT MAKES A GREAT VALENTINE’S DAY GIFT!!

Want to read Dream on It right now?

“I just read the entire book “Dream on it”, as I have always been an avid and vivid dreamer, and your book has been fun to read and very enlightening.

Don’t ya hate that dream where your car goes off a bridge or a cliff into water, and as you struggle to get out of the car the water rises and you’re certain you’re going to die? Yeah, I hate it too. It’s kind of surprising how common that dream is… until you know what it means. Below is a car drowning dream that I recently featured in my newspaper column The Dream Zone.

Dear Lauri,
I had a dream my fiancé was taking me to the ocean and on the way we went over a bridge and our boys flew out of the car and so did my fiancé. I was stuck while the car filled up with water and the next thing I knew I was right there flying next to them. – Sheri 28, Marshall, MI

Lauri: Is there anything going on that you fear is going to pull you away from your fiancé and children? Like a new job or some new responsibility? The bridge is your ability to get through some sort of transition in your life and the car is your ability to keep moving forward in life despite the transition. The rising water suggests you are becoming increasingly overwhelmed and perhaps fearful you’re not going to make it through this transition. However, your dream seems to be encouraging you at the end by showing you flying next to your family, as if to say, “Just stick this through and then you’ll see that things will really start looking up for you.”

Sherri replies: Actually yes. My stress level is through the roof and my boyfriend has been looking for a job or possibly going back to school. But if he went back to school he would have to live in a dorm and not be with us. We are also about to lose our apartment actually and we are trying to find a place to move. With him considering school, I guess I am feeling like I would be left behind in a sense.

As you can see from Sherri’s car drowning dream, that this is so common because we ALL experience those moments in life that seem so utterly overwhelming we just don’t know how to keep moving forward. But what we can also learn from her dream is that no matter how upsetting the dream, it will always hold a priceless piece of advice or encouragement that we need at that very time in our life.

Keep them by your bedside so you can easily figure out your dreams as soon as you wake from them. You’ll wonder why you didn’t get them sooner!

“I had a crazy, disturbing dream. When I awoke, I was frightened. After breaking it apart, I realized the dream was full of symbols that made sense to my life… to my relief! Glad I read your books!” – Rhonda, Dayton, TN

Dear Lauri,
I dreamed I was in the market for a new car so I called my old personal trainer who, in the dream, was a car salesman and told him what I wanted. He said he’d have it ready. I show up at the dealership and it’s a purple sports car with glitter! After I jumped in and took off, I realized it was only a one-seater. I started to have second thoughts because I thought for sure it was a V6, but as I was accelerating I noticed that it was only a 4 cylinder. I called my trainer/dealer and told him I was going to bring it back. Then I woke up.
– Bobbi 35, New York

Lauri: You must be in the market for a new direction in waking life. While it seems odd that your former trainer was the car dealer in the dream it is perfectly natural to your dreaming mind because he represents your ability to be disciplined, and that is what it will take to get yourself moving in this new direction in real life. The car is purple because that is the color of devotion. You must not be feeling quite as devoted to this direction as you once were. And it is glittery because that represents the glitz and glamor of it in your mind. It seems that once this idea became a reality you realized it wasn’t what you had hoped and it didn’t leave much room for anyone or anything else in your life (the one seat). It is a 4 cylinder rather than a V6 because you are losing your “drive,” your motivation, to continue with it. It seems that this new waking life direction just isn’t practical for your life and it’s best to go back to the drawing board.

Bobbi replies: I have been a personality in the media for about 12 years, and recently my commitments have taken over my life. Going into the business, there was a small element of “glitz and glamour” thoughts, but I quickly learned that wasn’t going to be the case. That passion and drive has certainly dwindled in the past few months, as it’s taken quite a toll on me living a truly happy and fulfilling life. I have indeed been toying with the idea of heading in a totally different direction.

Everything in your dreams has an awful lot to say about your life. When you can understand what your dreams are telling you, you can make huge positive changes in your life and you’ll wonder why you didn’t start listening to your dreams sooner! Grab yourself a copy of one of my books and you’ll never have to wonder what your dreams mean again!

“I don’t know why I didn’t order these books YEARS ago. I’m halfway through “So What Did You Dream Last Night” and LOVE LOVE LOVE it!! You had me cracking up several times. I’m so happy to know I’m not the only one with completely off the wall dreams.” – Gina, Springdale, PA

I constantly dream of the same thing and it can last all night. I am usually at a new place, apartment when my car is stolen. It is always my Dodge Durango that is stolen by someone and I try all night long to get it back. Sometimes I know the person that took it and I go get it back and then I wake up in the morning and it is gone again. I can never keep it in my possession. The impact of the car being gone is that I will try to steal other cars, sometimes being successful, other times not, but I steal the cars to try to get back home. It really stresses me out BAD! Can u help? – Jesse

Lauri: Our cars, to our dreaming mind, mean much more than just being our car. To the dreaming mind our car is our ability to get where we want to go in life as well as our “drive” and motivation to reach certain goals.

Your car is constantly stolen in your dreams, which is a good indication that you may constantly feel directionless or that you feel you were robbed of an opportunity to reach a goal you had for yourself. It is also possible that this recurring dream is commenting on a recurring behavior pattern of losing interest. Do you tend to start something but not finish because of a lack of drive?

Very interesting that you also become a thief in your dreams! Do you tend to take shortcuts or try to find the easy way in waking life? I think you may not have found your path yet, you’ve not yet found that certain goal that keeps you motivated and wanting to work hard at it every day. You’re not alone. Many of us are wandering through life aimlessly, just going through the motions and not feeling fulfilled or excited about much.

Your dreams want you to find a new path, which is why they keep taking your car away from you in your dream, because the path you are on now isn’t going to get you “home,” it isn’t going to take you to a place in your life where you feel completeness and fulfillment. Ask yourself what you enjoy doing the most. See if you can incorporate that into your life in a productive manner that helps you grow and progress a little each day. Having trouble coming up worth it? Ask your dreams tonight to show you. That’s what they are there for. When you finally find the road you’re meant to travel, Or take the necessary action to get on the road you know you want, these dreams will stop!

Jesse replies: I have been trying to complete law school now for 3 years. I have not been able to finish because i had a baby, we can’t afford it and it’s out of state so i can’t go back to california to finish. I am struggling with how to make graduation happen and I can’t seem to find a way to make it happen. Since becoming a mother, I am second guessing what I should be doing for a career.

I am wondering if I am encountering all these obstacles because I shouldn’t be going to law school or be a lawyer. What I like doing most is working for animals’ rights’ and learning/speaking foreign languages. the only way i can see to incorporate those two loves is being an international lawyer with animal rights as a side specialty. This interpretation makes total sense! I knew I could count on you to help. You are truly amazing!

Our dreams will be persistent like Jesse’s recurring car dream when something in our life is not progressing. Our dreams try to step in and point us in the right direction, but if we don’t pay attention to them, they will continue to come back, again and again, until you finally listen and take their advice.

THE BEST WAY to figure out what is causing your recurring dreams is to look at what happened the day before the dream. Your dreams at night are ALWAYS connected to your previous day. My book Cracking The Dream Code has a dream decoding journal in it specifically designed to help you make those crucial connections between your day and what happens in your dreams that night. No other dream book lays it out for you this way. Want “aha! moment” after “aha! moment?” Want to be able to easily fit the pieces of your dream puzzle together? This book will do it for ya!

Don’t ignore your dreams they are your built in problem solvers. Want to know how many dreams you’ve had so far? Try my new Dream Calculator
