I dreamed I was choking on something I drank. When I looked in the mirror, I saw all these veins of blue all over my face. The veins were heavier on the left side than the right. I was freaked out by the veins so I woke myself up   – Nikole 35, Memphis, TN

Lauri: Like a mirror, dreams are a reflection of what’s really going on in our life as well as what is going on within the self. Your dream seems to suggest that you may have recently choked on your words in some way. Is there something you need or want to say but can’t or didn’t? When a dream draws attention to the face, it usually means there is a reality you need to face, and your dream mirror is showing you that reality quite clearly. What you see in the mirror is not a commentary on your physical appearance but rather a reflection of your psychological state at the the time of the dream. That being said, the veins on your face are more likely a play on words and mean vain. Are you afraid that speaking up about a certain issue may have been “in vain?”

Nikole replies: This is too funny. There’s definitely a situation I could’ve handled differently. I could’ve spoken my mind but decided it would be in vain and not worth the trouble. Funny how I missed the literal translation because I was so focused on the color blue. I didn’t explicitly tell someone how I felt about their actions and I just let the friendship end quietly. It wasn’t worth the effort when I looked at it as a whole.

Lauri replies: That may be why the veins were heavier on the left side of your face. Through the dream you were probably “facing” the reality that this issue would be better “left” alone.

I had a dream where I was at a beautiful beach and was enjoying the scenic sunset.  Suddenly, I got shocked by seeing a naked guy go for a swim in the sea.  He had an amazingly big penis.  I smiled and ogled at him for a little while.  Then, I got up to go for a walk along the waterline.  Many people were enjoying the evening.  I found many guys sitting naked or semi-naked.  They were all in various activities, some reading, some sprawled out.  But all of them had big penises.  I remember thinking, “Hey, in this part of city, all the guys have big penises!”   – Sangita

Lauri:   I have this suspicion that many of my readers would like to know in what city your dream took place! Anyhoo, as delightfully phallic as your dream is, it is really all about you. The beach setting and the nakedness are all about freedom and getting things out in the open. In real life have you recently gotten something off your chest or opened up about something? Penises in dreams tend to be connected to one’s assertiveness and ability to “stand firm” about certain issues. And usually the bigger something is in a dream the bigger a deal it is in real life. So what I am getting from this dream is that you may have recently “grown a pair” so to speak and “stood up” for yourself in some way… in a BIG way. And in doing so, it brought about a certain sense of freedom, which is great! Because when we hold things in or don’t stand up for ourselves, we become imprisoned by fear and worry. Life’s too short for that nonsense. Live life in a big way while you’re here. And your dream suggests you are doing just that!

Sangita replies: Your interpretation is bang on. I am going through a tough phase of life, which is making me make a lot of tough decisions.  I am a very emotional person, and generally avoid taking such tough stances but I did make the decision to put an end to a toxic relationship and friendships.  My boyfriend and friends, were taking me and my friendship for granted.  I decided that I was better off alone than being in the company of people who were making me feel less than what I was and were not appreciating me.  I decided to begin anew and invest my emotions more carefully than what I had done in the past.

Like Sangita, your dreams are giving you great advice and encouragement too… no matter how bizarre or naughty they may be! So never dismiss your dreams as “just a dream,” and especially don’t let your dreams make you think something is wrong with you. The following teeth dream is from my nationally syndicated newspaper column The Dream Zone. And while more than teeth are lost in this dream, the message still applies…

Dear Lauri,
Last night I dreamed I had braces on all my teeth.  I removed all the braces and half of my teeth came out along with my tongue. It looked like a creepy science experiment, but it all grew back instantly. The weirdest part was my tongue. It had all kinds of weird colors and stuff on it, and I put it in a large glass of fruit punch. So creepy!   – Dave 36, Cleveland, OH

Lauri:  Sounds like you’re having a major communication issue. When any part of the mouth is brought to attention in a dream you can bet it is referring to something you have said recently. The braces suggest you have been trying to “straighten something out” verbally. But since your teeth and your tongue all came out in the dream, you must have said a lot of things that you wish you could take back and put back in.  Placing your tongue in fruit punch seems like a totally random and bizarre thing to do but I think it reflects that, after this communication, you felt like you were “punched.”  But fear not, your dream is giving you good news despite the embarrassment you must have experienced. It all grew back instantly, meaning that you’ll bounce back just fine. You have, “saved face,” so to speak.

Dave replies: Yesterday I called me ex, told him I was sorry and asked him to take me back, etc. It was a stupid move. This makes sense. Thank you.

Dave’s dream not only reflects his embarrassment after allowing too much out of his mouth, it also gives him encouragement that it will all be okay.

Dear Lauri,
I had a dream the other night that I was wiping my feet off and the more I wiped the more my skin started flaking off. I kept brushing it off and pretty soon there were chunks of skin peeling off like huge blisters. Before I knew it, bone was exposed. It seemed never ending. It didn’t hurt but I was mortified!!! And it felt so real. What’s it mean? It’s freaking me out.

Lauri: Oh my God. Eew!! Okay, now that I have pulled myself together… I think you are wiping your feet off in the dream because in real life you are trying to rid yourself of some sort of negativity. Negativity will often appear as, or be referenced as, dirt in our dreams because negativity dirties up an otherwise clean psyche. Since you are wiping it from your feet, it must mean that you either put your foot down in some way or stood your ground over a negative issue. And just as you were peeling away the layers of your skin, have you been peeling away the layers trying to expose the root of what is causing this negative issue?

Marcy replies: Yes! I am trying to find out what is going on with my son. He’s been having very bad behavior lately but I don’t know why. It’s like a mystery and it’s driving me crazy. I just want to fix it because I’m afraid he’s not happy about something. I did finally “put my foot down” with his attitude. It’s been very stressful for me because he’s otherwise a great kid.

Lauri replies: Get down to the bare bones, is the message. Keep peeling away. It may be something you have to take “one step at a time,” hence your feet, but you’ll find it.

Below is a dream I helped a friend with just this week. It’s pretty gross but at the same time, very informative. So much so that I used it in my weekly newspaper column The Dream Zone…

Dear Lauri,
A few nights ago I had a dream that I walked inside from being on my porch and noticed that there were slugs in my hair, slime and the whole bit! Totally freaked me out and woke me up. What does this mean?   – Deborah 41, Nashville, TN

Lauri:  Your hair represents your thoughts, your ideas, that which is on your mind. The slugs suggest that something has been bugging you but more specifically, it could be connected to someone you feel is slimy or they could represent that you have been feeling sluggish and down about something. Whatever it is, I’m wondering if it is something you have been keeping to yourself and are internalizing since, in your dream, you went from the outside to the inside. I believe the message of this dream is that in order to get this slimy situation out of your thoughts, you have to “come out” and be open and honest about it.

Deborah replies:  Wow, that totally makes sense. There is someone whom I’ve questioned their ethics/morals lately and have been bummed to learn that my intuition was correct. I tell my sister everything, but kept this one pretty close to the vest for two days before I shared a lot of it with her. The whole situation was something that disturbed me waaayyy down inside. Thank you for helping me to understand what the dream represents!

As you can see, dreams absolutely have meaning. What’s more, once you are able to understand them you’ll find that they offer very good advice, like Deborah’s dream. They are full of wisdom, ideas… answers! One of my clients refers to dreams as having a second brain. I love that analogy. It is like having a second brain, a night brain that is so much smarter and intuitive than our day brain.

Let me assure you that when you do dream about genitalia, whether it be your own or of someone else, there is no need to worry that you are a perverted sick freak. Genitalia dreams aren’t about the actual male or female body part but rather the PART of you that exhibits male or female energy.

Here is an excerpt from my latest book Dream On It, Unlock Your Dreams Change Your Life that beautifully illustrates the true meaning, and wisdom, in the genitalia dream…

I dreamed that a client of mine was undressing to change for yoga class, and I saw that she had an erect penis.  I told her I thought she was a woman.  She said she was both, really, and trying to decide which she wanted to be.  She then jumped into a swimming pool. I rarely dream of sexual issues and this was really weird!   – Connie 45

Lauri:  Don’t let this dream cause you to feel awkward around your client.  It’s merely symbolic of something that is going on with her, or more likely, going on with you.  Her penis was erect in the dream, which is your ability to exhibit male energy and “stand up” for yourself in some way.  Yoga is about being flexible, yet the erect penis is about being firm and rigid. Are you having a “hard” time deciding which way to be, just as the client was having a hard time deciding which gender to be in the dream?  Jumping in the pool implies that, despite the indecision, you are ready to “dive right in” and handle your business.

Connie:  I think the dream is about me.  I am facing some challenges in my work lately, and I am trying to change a world paradigm – not a simple task. I can handle it in different ways; I am choosing a gentle, quiet approach rather than a bold, confrontational one, hence trying to decide which gender is better. I am not giving up or giving in so jumping in would be appropriate. Thanks for helping me to see it as more than just a weird sex dream.

Even though in Connie’s dream, the penis belonged to someone else, it still is representative of her own male energy, remember, everyone in your dream is usually a representation of some part of you.  Connie’s dream is a wonderful example of how we all have inner male and inner female “parts” to our personality.  In Connie’s situation, she is using a balance of both of these energies by gently (the female part) approaching those who can help make the changes she wants, all while remaining persistent (the male part).  And so we see this nice balance in the form of a hermaphrodite!

Last week on my Blog Talk radio show, we talked about The 5 Most Common Bodily Affliction Dreams and also invited listeners to call in with their weird body dreams. And boy, did they call in! One of my favorites was caller Brenda’s dream about her daughter’s dismembered and rather chatty head! Have a listen below to listen to this hilarious dream AND to find out what the heck it means!



See how a funny and somewhat disturbing dream actually revealed to Brenda how much her daughter’s leaving the nest is really making her feel? That’s one of the purposes of dreaming, to help us see our current situation in a different light so that we can better understand the situation and especially, better understand our self. In real life Brenda has been trying to stay positive and be excited for her daughter but in her dream life, we see the truth: Brenda is having a hard time with the “dismemberment” of her daughter. In other words, her daughter leaving the nest is a “member” of the family being cut off from the tree.

What can she take from this? Well, now that she knows that this is really starting to get to her. she can hug her daughter a little tighter, spend a little more time with her and squeeze as much as she can out of these last remaining moment of her baby still being under her wing. Sigh…
